Let's state the most important point first: among the selection of five-star hotels in Navi Mumbai, the Four Points by Sheraton Navi Mumbai's (FPS) Executive Room provides the best value in terms of sheer area by a considerable margin. The cost per square foot is the same or less than rooms two thirds (or less) its size. Despite its value, there is no lack of amenities: the room is expansive and functional, with plenty of seating, a breakfast table, a walk-in closet, two bathrooms (the en suite offering a bathtub and enormous shower) and a vast amount of glass frontage (perfect for those who love a lot of sunlight).

Service is the second highlight, consistently of a superior grade, prompt and responsive (barring some delays when ordering in-room services): an apparent minor miscommunication between the booking agent and the hotel was resolved quickly; restaurant staff were alert, knowledgeable and attentive and a senior IT staff member put heroic efforts into successfully connecting the room's smart tv to the Wi-Fi network.

FPS's location is also a plus point: being next to the Vashi rail station, the Mumbai-Satara highway and two malls, Inorbit Mall & Raghuleela, means you have good options for travel, food and basic shopping needs.

Nevertheless, there are issues that prevent the hotel from being perfect for its price point. A few are minor: the corner coffee shop, for example, does double duty as the executive lounge in the evenings and as such, is understandably basic and bare-bones. Others are more apparent: The quality of the food was inconsistent, ranging from the good (seafood chowder) to the unrecognizable (a late-night spaghetti bolognaise). While the abundance of nearby malls and connectivity of the place meant this did not pose too much of a problem, it is still a point to consider for those who might want to staycation.

The most concerning issue however was that, in what I was informed was standard Four Points practice, intra-hotel services such as room service and meals in the restaurant could not be charged to the room. This means that you have to essentially carry around your cell phone or wallet at all time, in the very hotel you are staying in. Want to order a beverage while relaxing by the pool? Better have water proof pockets in your swimwear for your preferred payment method. It seemed an entirely arbitrary and unnecessary hurdle to full utilization of the hotel and as such, detracts from the final score.

The food issue aside, it is frustrating to me that the corporate policy (something beyond the control of the individual hotel) of not allowing hotel expenses to be charged to the room would be the reason that prevents FPS from being awarded the first perfect evaluation I have ever given a hotel.

In the end, as always, an evaluation of a hotel is ultimately dependant on what your purpose is: while the executive suite would make for a weekend staycation pick of excellent value, the inconsistency of the food and the inconvenience of not being able to charge to your room undermines that particular proposition. The best use of FPS would then seem to be as a base of operations for business in the area: book a standard or similar room and capitalize on the hotel’s excellent connectivity and location.

The FPS, on the whole, a great hotel and well worth your patronage if you have business in the area. I just hope that corporate corrects some of its more restrictive policies so that its full potential can be unlocked...
