Wish we could recommend this place, but unfortunately multiple aspects of our stay fell below expectations.
To start with the positives, the property is located under 2 km from the town center, and we appreciated being away from the hustle and bustle while maintaining accessibility. There is also a pretty large lawn area which looks lovely to picnic on in good weather. Rooms have hot showers. Wifi functional but weak at just 2mbps and couldn't support a zoom meeting. It was fine for normal web browsing, and if one sat closer to the balcony.
However, the room, though spacious, looked dated and worn out, and it was already one of their better rooms. The walls were badly in need of a fresh coat of paint. The first room we were given had a toilet with cracked cistern, so when flushed, water flower out of it onto the floor instead of into the toilet bowl. We were changed to another room that had a leaking tap that caused water to drip down the wall (photo attached) which we didn't bother to make a fuss about. Perhaps that is the standard for rooms at this price range in the area.
What disappointed us the most, however, was their overpriced services. From driver services to Sibayak sunrise hike to motorbike rental, we were able to find prices at least 30% cheaper elsewhere. For example, for the Sibayak sunrise hike, we were quoted 350k per person at first, but because apparently no one else at the rest house was going on the same day as us, they said we would need to pay 1 mil. We asked at another place and paid 200k per person to join a small group and had a wonderful time. The accomodations has so much potential if the owners put in a little more effort in room maintenance and were a little less...
Read moreAs 4 travellers on a tight budget we found this hostel conveniently located as it was closer to the volcano than most other hotels but was only a 20 minute walk to the centre of berastagi (the volcano is the main/only attraction, not much else to do so we wouldn't recommend staying for more than one night!) The hotel itself is nothing special but is perfectly adequate and comfortable. The highlight for us was the incredible help we received from one of the members of staff named David. He called multiple hotels in Lake Toba for us when we were silly and hadn't booked anything for the idul fitri holiday- everywhere was full but David was so committed to not letting us go without a place to stay when we got there! He also organised our car to lake Toba which included two stops at landmarks along the way. We would thoroughly recommend this hostel purely because you will have the opportunity to meet David! Read moreWe didn't like this place at all. The room had a hole in the window. The room was very worn out (Although, the owners currently make an effort to paint parts of the establishment again). During dinner, the room was crowded of flies all over the floor due to the door being contineously open. The biggest problem however, lies not with the overpriced accomodation, but with the owners themself. Some members of the family are helpful and friendly, while some are not. While offering us an overpriced package of 900.000 rupiah for tours, we were told that "You can't get Grab here. Others have tried and failed". When we complained about the price, one of the family members smilingly said that "That's what holidays are like, sometimes you get cheap and other times you get expensive". Easy to say when you are the one ripping us off. Sorry, but we can't recommend in comparison of the prices & quality offered at some...
