I've stayed in Hotel Giosue a Mare for one week. We had a double room with breakfast and dinner included. While the hotel wasn't terrible, there are sure a lot of things the could improve.
Our room was small and basic but it looked nice. Unfortunately it wasn't really clean, as there was sand en hair on the ground when we first entered. Besides that, the airconditioning was doing the bare minimum, so our room was pretty hot. Not unbearable, but not great either. The main window would not open, so we only got fresh air from the small window in our bathroom.
The biggest problem with our room however were the paper thin walls. We could hear people talking in the hallway very clearly and in the rooms next to ours we were able to hear people receiving calls (at 4 and 6 in the morning), getting messages on their mobile phone and even people switching the light on and off. As this hotel accomodates a lot of people leaving early in the morning, this is uncomfortable when you just want a good night of sleep.
What we also thought was a pity (and I'll admit, that's something we have to be more assertive about ourselves next time) is that we didn't have a balcony. People who were only staying one night got big rooms with larges balconies. Even though we were staying for a whole week, our room didn't have a balcony, so we got nowhere to sit except for our beds.
The location of Giosue a Mare is great. You can reach surrounding villages and highlights of the area quick and easy by bus or train. The bus leaves down the road from the hotel and the train station is only a 20 minute walk. The beach next to the hotel is also a big plus, especially if you just want to go for a quick swim.
The food was okay. Some days it was really tasty, some days it was not. The staff in the restaurant was friendly and they were working very hard to accomodate everyone. Some of the other staff members, especially at the bar, I found to be more rude and condescending (with the exception of the young woman at the bar with the curly hair, she was very sweet). It might be Italian temperament, but in my opinion that's no excuse to act snarky towards your guests. Most of the staff members barely speak English, making it hard to clearly communicate with each other. Also, one day when we came back to our room, the maid forgot to lock our door, leaving it open the whole day. Glad the room had a safe to store our valueable belonings ;)
The hotel also hosts a lot of parties for the local Italian people. These parties are way more important for the hotel than their actual guests, or so it seems. Staff is busy working at the party and the don't have time to help you or serve you. As I said before, it depends on different staff members how they handle this. But generally, if you stand in their way for one second too long, you'll get a nasty look or remark.
If you're looking for a hotel at a nice location, then Giosue a Mare is a good place to stay. Othewise I would not recommend this hotel. Our room was acceptable at best and we've felt like unwelcome guests a lot. This hotel was the most pitiful part of an otherwise great...
Read moreMy wife and I booked this through Jet2 - transfer from Napoli Airport was under an hour and we were the first to be dropped off. The hotel sent a minibus up to collect us from the main road. |The location suited us 100% - Meta is not in the centre of Sorrento, but a short bus, train or car journey into the town...prob about 15 minutes as the roads are windy, cobbled at times and can be busy with local traffic... mainly mopeds and Fiats!! The hotel itself sits right on its own private beach...no need to pay lots of Euros to enter a beach club for the day as our package included sunbeds every day, no more than about 10-15 metres from the waters edge and the beach is sand not pebbles. |Breakfast was fairly basic but freshly cooked bacon, eggs or an omelette along with a wide selection of local pastries etc was lovely. We found Pasquale and Chavase friendly and helpful - I still miss my daily chats with Pasquale. |The bedroom we had overlooked the sea, was really clean all had air con etc. If you want to the hotel provide a free shuttle bus and will drive you into Sorrento and collect you, this is available hourly from 5.30pm. Thank you Genarro for the lifts and chats. |Sorrento is busy and touristy, lovely restaurants and shops and once you find you bearings is easy to get around. However, you will have lots of stairs or an elevator (€1 each way) to get down to the ferry port. |We didn't book excursions but found out own way down to the port to buy ferry tickets to Amalfi one day and Capri another...cost about €45 each for a return for each trip. Capri is beautiful but you'll need to spend another €20 each for bus tickets to get around the island or queue for a long time to use the funicular to get up to Capri Town. We chose the buses as they take you to Ana Capri and Capri town...we liked Ana Capri a bit more as it was less crowded. Designer shops everywhere!! |We also did a day trip to Pompeii and caught a train from Meta Di Sorrento station...€5 each for a return ticket!! Entrance was €22 but we didn't book a guided tour.... reckon that's the best thing to do as we got a bit lost. It was really hot there - take the opportunity to use the toilets at the entrance and buy water as there's not many opportunities inside. |We used the local buses most days €2 per person per trip - the 008 to Sorrento goes from the bottom (Meta Spaggia) |by the beach clubs and takes you into the centre of town.|100 yards from the hotel is a great restaurant called Tico Tico. We ate there 3 times and even had a takeaway pizza from there. Great value and great quality food. |Great hotel, great service, fantastic location in the beach and the Amalfi Coast is a destination that you need to visit at least once to explore and...
Read moreRecently stayed in this hotel for eight nights and was very impressed with it. The staff were super helpful, picked us up from our drop off point (and dropped us off at the same place for our coach back to the airport) and helped with our luggage. They were also happy to help navigate busses, trains and help book excursions/ trips too. The breakfast was lovely with a wide variety of things to choose from & the staff running it are also very friendly and accommodating! The rooms were very clean and modern with the most comfortable beds and pillows I have ever slept in. I highly recommend a room with a balcony because the views are insanely beautiful all day, especially at sunset. They also offered free wifi which is very good & even worked on the beach.
The hotel is in a beautiful location, the whole of Meta was lovely to look at and walk round. The hotels location was close enough to the towns and cities, but with the ability to retire somewhere quiet and relaxing in the evening! There were decent transport options as there was a bus to Sorrento every 20 minutes from just down the road near the car park and there was also a train-station in meta which you can either walk or bus to!
The only downside to this place for me personally was the lack of supermarkets/ shops (every shop on the map I walked to was never open) and I also struggled to find places to eat (that didn’t only serve seafood). I ended up having tea at the same two places for the whole week. there was a lovely bar called I Gradoni, located at the top of the brick stairs directly across from the hotel, the staff there were wonderful and the food & cocktails were lovely! The other place was called Bar Antonietta, it was up the next set of stairs & across the road. It was also lovely & they served great pizza and traditional Italian deserts at a very affordable price. Overall i would definitely recommend staying at this hotel and I do plan on...
