Ryokan Sanga is an absolute gem - an authentic, boutique ryokan in the woods along the river. The grounds are gorgeous, with beautiful details everywhere. I was very grateful that Ryokan Sanga accepts solo travellers - as many ryokan don’t, or else they charge you for two. I had a perfect solo travel experience. Here’s what you should know:||Access: Ryokan Sanga is ~2km outside of the town centre of Kurokawa Onsen. I didn’t have a car, and I didn’t regret that at all. Ryokan Sanga sent a driver to pick me up from the bus stop, and since I arrived several hours before check-in, he dropped me off in the little town of Kurokawa Onsen and took my bags to the ryokan. He then picked me up before checkin, and when we arrived, my bags were in my room. The ryokan offers free shuttles to town or to other Onsen if you are doing the Nyuto Tegata (Onsen hopping pass). After checkout, they dropped me off in town, and then picked me up with my suitcase later that day and took me to the bus stop. The service was beyond amazing.||Room: I booked a Standard room for one night. It had no Onsen and no shower (just a toilet and sink). There was also a closet and a kitchenette area. Ukata, socks and slippers are provided. You can hear the roar of the river and waterfall, which turned out to be perfect white noise for sleeping.||Onsen: When I checked in I booked the private outdoor Onsen for the evening and the following morning (no extra charge). Bookings are for 50mins and there are washing facilities, a sink and hairdryer. The outdoor Onsen is beautiful- it is right beside the river with waterfalls (see pics).||Meals: I booked the last meal times which were 7pm for dinner and 8:30am for breakfast - the food was amazing; the dinner was one of my most memorable in my travels to Japan. See sample menu.||I cannot recommend Ryokan Sanga...

Where do I begin? This place is incredible...

Staff: They were ALL super attentive and professional, even at times with language barrier. They really do try and do what they can to make your stay comfortable. Our room was a little cold and called the front desk (spoke limited English), and in 5 minutes, a space heater was at our door!

Service: Due to weather, we had to leave our last hotel way early, and that means we got to Sanga Ryokan earlier than the check in time. They were accommodating, polite about their check in policy but also provided alternative. They send us to a nearby village with their shuttle and let us check in slightly early when the room was ready. To me, service is all about doing their best and trying... in this case, i felt they did above and beyond.

Food: I know taste can often be personal... but to us, it definitely worth every penny... it was fine, tasty, and very well decorated. Everything tasted so fine, quality and fresh.

Room: Beside it was a little cold (we were there on one of the coldest day) we had everything in there. Ryokan typically do not have your own bath, for us we had a toilet, which was super useful.

Onsen: They had PRIVATE onsen! If you are like us that are not comfortable getting stripped down in front of strangers, Ryokan Sanga comes with private onsen where you can book to use. Private onsen typically comes with higher priced Ryokans. And did i tell you they also have outdoor onsen and some good winter snowy view? :)

Speaking of price (which I know it is also personal).... we find all these for at a very, very affordable price point! We are super happy with this Ryokan and will highly recommend to whoever looking to experience...

Lovely ryokan, and I loved the private bath and the nature around the rooms. The garden with lanterns and small streams is beautiful! As western couple visiting Japan this was our first Ryokan experience and the most luxurious and expensive place we booked. The food was a really special experience for us. A lot of absolute delicious dishes, always beautiful presented. Some weird tasting stuff outside out comfort zone but that's part of the experience of course (and not a bad thing). Impressive variation since we stayed 4 nights! We visited the mixed bath and the outdoor wooden bath. Both were a bit too hot for us. But the private stone bath was perfect! Good temperature and great atmosphere. I liked the rocks at the bottom insted of a concrete floor. We declined the bath cleaning service and drained the bath our selve before bed. At the time, this seemed to be a good plan, but in hindsight, we should have asked the staff it that's OK. Maybe it is impolite to decline cleaning service or draining the bad is not allowed... I am not sure and would suggest asking before doing this. In clonclusion: absolutely great stay and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in traditional ryokan!

Absolutely fantastic. Location was a bit difficult to find at first as you have to drive through narrow roads. We stayed a night with the private onsen room. I love the onsen so much. Service was perfect. Receptionist and staff were all polite and helped with our luggage. As the drive down the lobby was steep, they have a valet to help you park your car so you don’t have to wiggle your way back up the parking lot from the lobby. Room was super spacious but was a bit old. Situated right beside a river you can hear the river coursing through. Sekkisei skincare was provided. As you head for dinner, the staff will prepare the futon beds. Each room will be provided different slippers to wear indoors and outdoors. Yukata is provided. Food was great! Delicious breakfast and dinner that was provided. Try to arrive before 6pm as it’s the earliest dinner time. At check in they will ask for your preferred dinner and breakfast time. Great ryokan experience if you’re passing by Kurokawa. Not much to do at the location hence would recommend only if you’re passing through to get to Aso and if you are driving. It’s expensive but worth the experience.

I would love to give this place 5 stars because of the high level of service provided by the staff and the lovely and peaceful atmosphere, but I cannot. My overall stay was pleasant but there were several flaws that are hard to overlook: 1. Our room had no shower 2. Our room had very poor WiFi connection (almost none at times) and signal reception was poor 3. Rooms had thin walls and you could easily here noises coming from adjacent rooms 4. Onsens were rather small apart from the outdoor mixed onsen, and only had 1-2 showers each 5. Our first breakfast was unacceptably plain, with it ending almost before we knew it had began. We stayed two nights, and the meals on the second day were clearly better and more substantial, so why skimp on the meals for the first day? Having been to ryokans across various regions in Japan, Ryokan Sanga noticeably lags behind in all of the above aspects. You may argue that this is the normal standard for ryokans in kurokawa onsen, but if that is the case, then it reflects more on the standards for the ryokans in this area as a whole.
