Our stay at this lovely ryokan was magical! It's incredibly peaceful (both inside and the surrounding area) and we didn't often see other guests despite it being the height of summer. ||Our room was in the charming traditional Japanese style and had all the amenities we expected including a good wifi connection. Our room had an adjoining toilet and sink area. No private shower or bath (I actually hadn't realised when we first booked) but there is an Onsen on the ground floor with showers for you to wash at before you go in. I did have to overcome a deep set fear of public nudity before I plucked up the courage to use the Onsen (blame being British!?) but I'm seriously glad that I did as it was the most unique and brilliant experience ever. I would highly recommend it to everyone! After all my fussing I ended up getting the whole Onsen to myself anyway and shouldn't have worried in the first place. If you're nervous about Onsen etiquette, there is plenty about it online and on YouTube! I now know it would be really sad to miss out on such an experience. Marukyo's Onsen is particularly good as it has an outdoor and indoor section. The outdoor section was definitely my favourite and lovely to sit in at night time. Beautifully lit and hidden away by plants and foliage! Steamy hot and lovely on the skin. ||Would definitely...

Read moreThis is a small ryokan, located 5 minutes walk from the local train station. It does however back onto the train tracks, but the trains on that track are not frequent, and usually do not run late into the evening. Therefore our sleep was never disturbed.||||The Japanese rooms are good sized, with AC, TV, tea making facilities, private toilet and the sleeping materials. Sleeping on the tatami was actually quite comfortable! ||||The food was amazing for dinner, wonderful mix of hot and cold courses, all presented on a huge tray. I won't spoil it with any photos, but we were very full and content. The staff are really nice, especially the food servers who were super attentive and friendly, even if they were not able to speak much english. ||||The onsen part of the ryokan was split into male and female with no private facilities. Really hot water, infused with charcoal with a small indoor and outdoor pool. Never got too busy since there are only 18 rooms. Plenty of toiletries as well for communal use. ||||All in all, we had an amazing time here, even if it was only 1 night. We were on a bit of a tight schedule. We visited Nikko the next day. I would stay here again, but equally would try out another onsen area also. If you are deciding whether you want to stay here, I would recommend that you book now and enjoy...
