I stayed there about 3 nights, 7 ~ 10 / 01 / 2023... It was a much needed vacation so I might have a positive prejudice but here is my review; There are two hotels managed by the same family (Nikko Park Lodge Tobu Station & Nikko Park Lodge Mountain Side. Park Lodge T.S. is right next to station, Mountain Side is around 20-25mins walk from station. Although it is further, it is a beautiful wooden lodge with 2 floors, in a quiter area. The atmosphere of mountain lodge is beautiful. While I was visiting they provided shuttle service at 09.00 from Mountain Side to Park Lodge T.S. and at 17.00 from Park Lodge T.S. to Mountain Side. (It was winter, roads were sometimes icy and it got dark early so I preferred shuttle than walking). The lobby/reception is a living area. It was very cozy. There is also dormitory option but I stayed in the private rooms. The room was irregularly shaped and old but I actually felt very comfy like I was staying at a grandparent's house. Both bathroom and room were clean. My room had a nice view of the mountains that can be enjoyed from a certain angle, but still, very calming. There was a pinboard with cards from previous visitors, and it seemed like a lot of people felt the same coziness and sincerity in this place. I felt safe and peaceful as a solo female visitor.

The room was dirty, including the toilet. The A/C only went as low as 20 C, and constantly had a "change air filter" notification. The staff was always hard to find, and if found, always on their respective cell phones. There was supposed to be a balcony for our room. We were disappointed that the only balcony was communal and on the first floor. Not only that, but the family that lives there was occupying it when we wanted to use it at all. The only reasons we paid more were for an extra wide double bed and said balcony. The bed was painful to sleep on, and I netted about ten minutes total sleep. The children staying next to us were running in the halls, loudly, for about half an hour around eight in the morning. Which, is apparently okay to the staff. I've attached the picture of our "mountain view", which more highlights the areas rooftops and power lines than anything else. Awful place Too much money Unhelpful/aloof staff. I recommend ANYWHERE else Even having never, regretfully, stayed in such places myself. Sadly 1/5 is the lowest I can give.

Really, it's more like a 4.5 than 4. My room was a good value. It has a bath with shower and small tub; a small but cold refrigerator; a huge, comfortable bed; great air conditioning. It's been a while since remodeling was done but everything is serviceable. There's a hot tub downstairs, a large common area with couches and tables, coffee, water, tea. They have a great covered porch adjacent to the common area. It's a lodge that's conducive to bringing friendly people together from all over. The prepare breakfast and dinner, if you like - good food at quite reasonable prices. There is beer, soft drinks, some mixed drinks, and snacks for sale. It's about a 20-minute walk from the train and bus station, though they have transportation a couple of times a day. Otherwise you can call a taxi. Thank you, Ken!

In regards to the premises of Nikko Park Lodge Mountainside, it was not of any sound standard at all given the cost they fraudulently charged. We had to leave the venue immediately due to health and safety concerns; the main concern being that there was a smell of butane or kersosene throughout the place. ||||The dusty, unclean bedroom was virtually impossible to move around in given the size of the beds that were completely wrong for the size of the room thus making it even the more the dangerous. The bathroom wasn’t well maintained either, it was liken to one would find on a construction site. You have to step into over a nearly one foot high lip through the doorway.||||When we asked to have a taxi to be called for, the management flatly refused to oblige. We kept asking for a taxi so we could leave, but the management continued to refuse even after 8 times of requesting a taxi to be called. This made us felt further unsafe thus began fervently demanding for one to the point almost yelling. Even when I tried to take the luggage outside to begin walking back down the hill towards the downtown are, I was stopped physically. Not asked politely to stop, instead I was almost pushed over with the luggage pushed away from me. After this shocking incident, my mother explained for the third and final time why we wanted to leave. ||||The point is, regardless of the reasons, it is our prerogative to do so as it is of anyone who chooses to do so. Yet they kept trying to prevent us in just doing that. Until finally, who I suspect to be the actual owner of the premises (a non-Japanese), grudgingly agreed to drive us back to the train station in a van without any assistance with our luggage and essentially dumped us at the station. ||||After we were able to find a more suitable, clean and safe hotel to stay in, I was soon able to learn that the Nikko Park Lodge hostels, as there are two of them, are known and are regarded as the worse in the area bringing much anger among the local operators who clearly operate their premises at a far more superior standard as Nikko Park Lodge management does. ||||Essentially they took money under false pretences and were completely unhelpful and deceitful in all dealings. The cost of this place was expensive as in comparison to the cost of the other hotels in Nikko downtown area. And these hotels are given 3 to 4 star ratings. Again essentially, they stole money from us. ||||The standard of this place is demonstratively sub-standard to the point of being actually unhealthy and dangerous. Clearly the management rely on people who have no idea what healthy, clean standards are. ||||The fact, Agoda and Booking.com and apparently some other sites allowing such a premises to be listed on their sites raises more questions about them. Do they not check-out the listed places for themselves? ||||Nikko Park Lodge Mountainside premises felt unsafe and insecure in regards to both the staff and the building itself. It was a horrible,...

We stayed at Nikko Park Lodge and really enjoyed our time here! 🌲 It’s about a 20-minute walk from the train station, but honestly, the walk itself was so scenic and peaceful — we loved it! 🍂 The location is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by nature, and there’s great food and an onsen nearby.

The dorm room was simple and cozy — we did spot a few bugs, but no bed bugs 👍. They mentioned heated blankets, though we couldn’t find them 🤔. The beds were a little firm but still comfy (pretty standard for Japan 🇯🇵).

The shower area is also an onsen ♨️, which was really cool — though the water temperature changed a lot between days (super hot one day, chilly the next 🥵🥶). The walls had a bit of mold, but it’s understandable given all the steam from the onsen.

They offer free drinks and coffee ☕️, which is a nice touch — though there weren’t any cups when we tried to grab some 😅.

Overall, Nikko was absolutely beautiful, and this lodge was a great choice for exploring the area. 🌸 Despite a few small issues, the charm of the location and the atmosphere made it a really good experience. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for something peaceful...
