I booked my parents the private room which was spacious but sheets were dirty , pillow was too soft and found dead roaches. I had the dorm room and since I was sleeping on the bottom bunk bed, I can notice all around the circumference of my bed was piles and balls of dust in the gaps and corners , quite disgusting. I read past reviews after staying there and other guests have complained before about dust but seems like the host hasn't done anything about it.
I felt host was so unwelcoming and inattentive when we came up to the main door of the guesthouse. He didn't offer us slippers but did allow us to check in 20 minutes early.
My parents are 75+ y/o and we had 3 heavy luggage and the guy was right in front of us sitting at his desk doing nothing (there were no other guests he had to attend to) when I had to carry two big luggages myself up the steep staircase with my Dad carrying another luggage. Even when we left next day he just stood up at his desk and watched us leave as if he was glad another guest is gone .
One more thing, although when I asked him questions, he did answer and tried to be helpful but he gave us a bus timetable that was not updated and we waited for the bus that didn't come so we had to walk 1 km to the village.
I've stayed in many hostels and first one for my parents but overall this was a bad...
Read moreI stayed in this hostel because it's within walking distance to the heritage site but also it's the last accommodation I can find as I only decided to head to Shirakawago after I found out I had to go Japan for a business trip. I was just lucky to find the last available room (it's a cosy room for two near the kitchen) in the area. ||||That said, it was a fantastic choice! The room was sparkling clean and of good size. The shared facilities were very well kept and a lady was constantly cleaning the area. When we were preparing our dinner (instant noodles) she helped us by watching out for the boiling water. The guests who stayed at the shared bedroom were very quiet too and everyone was just doing their own thing. We arrived at about 12pm and was allowed to check in as the room was available. After leaving our stuffs, the owner offered to drive us to the village (which was actually just 20mins walk from the bus station). it was raining the two full days during our stay so we were appreciative of this gesture.||||The guest house also provides shuttle service from bus station to the hostel. This is really helpful during our stay because it was raining the whole day, imagine walking 20mins under the rain/snow :(||||Overall, this was a good stay and I will go back there should I visit...
Read moreThe location is about 10-15 min walk from the bus station. You can take a local bus and get off just a minute from the hostel, but bear in mind that the bus is not very frequent, when I arrived I would have to wait 30 minutes for the next bus so I decided to just walk, it's not far but in the Japanese summer of 32 degrees and carrying a luggage it wasn't great.||The staff is very friendly and helpful, they sent me detailed instructions on how to get to the hostel and answered all the question I had before and after check-in. There is a Daily convenience store a few minutes away, where I bought all my food and drinks.||I stayed in the shared room, the beds are quite spacious, there isn't a lot of space for big luggage, but I had small luggage so it was fine. ||The common area is quite comfortable and a good way to meet other travellers. There's also free tea/coffee which was really good. Wifi worked well and was very fast.||The showers are quite good, but there are only 2. Also, there are only 2 toilets. It wasn't a problem though as the place was not too busy.||||Cons:||No hand soap, I don't know why?||No laundry facilities. Having at least some coin-operated laundry or laundry service would...
