Amazing dining location. We had the hide surloin, and the food was top class, staff friendly, and the atmosphere was exactly what we liked.

During our stay we wanted to go for a nice diner, and our hotel owner recommended this place. We made sure we were there when it opened at 18:00, and the only available space was at the bar table. This gave a great view of the kitchen, and some interaction with the staff who helped us with the grill. We already decided on the hide surloin, and were quickly served. This was our first time eating hide beef and the three sauces all gave it a highly distinct flavour. I don't like food blogger lingo, but the beef really did fall apart in your mouth, and it was definitely the best beef I have ever had.

After leaving the place (we spend an hour in total), we realized that there were 10 people waiting outside. So tip, either place a reservation or be there right at 18:00.

The meat was not cheap, but more than worth the price. And if you are looking for a more affordable option then they have a variety of options on the menu which are of a lower price class.

10/10 would definitely...

Do not wait if it’s past 7pm on Saturday nights where they don’t take reservations.

We heard it’s going to be busy on Saturday nights, but we couldn’t get there early due to our hectic schedule. When we arrived at around 7pm there were only like 3 people working inside, so it’s understandable that no one was cleaning the tables after customers left. But also no one cared if anyone was waiting outside. After around 45 mins, I went in to ask if they are still open, since it’s getting closer to their last order time (8pm), but they told us we can wait. We waited until 8:10pm, yet still no one seemed interested in bringing us in. Finally we bought some bentos at the nearby convenience store for dinner.

Actually, you could have told us that you don’t have capacity for new customers, so that we could leave for another place, or at least don’t have to wait in the cold for nothing. However you made us wait but never let us in. Is it because there’s almost no competition in this region so you don’t care if you’re losing just a few customers? Very...

Arrogant Japanese attitude. The food is very average for that price. Unfortunately, the only open restaurant after 6 pm so I had to stay. I came around 7 pm with no reservation, and there was 1 place at the bar with no grill. I wanted to order the dish which doesn’t require a grill but they still asked me to wait for free places with a grill 🤦‍♀️ ‘Luckily’ it took ‘just’ 20 min waiting.. And I ordered the dish with no grill. Plus staff doesn’t speak even basic English - in the one of the most popular tourist...

Tenkara is a must-visit Yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) restaurant in Shirakawago, where you grill the meat yourself at the table. Hida beef was great! All the meat was top quality, and the sides and dessert were just as delicious. Don’t miss trying the local unfiltered sake, called Nigori, which pairs perfectly with the meal. The service was lovely, and it’s one of the few places in the village where you can have dinner at night. Definitely worth experiencing at least once!
