We have now visited Ohkunoshima 4 times in the last 5 years. Not much has changed at the resort (check out my earlier review on the hotel). ||||Access options are worth evaluating as we tried various in the last few trips: Via Shin-Osaka (2.5 hours using JR Shinkansen and local trains); via Hiroshima (1 hour using JR Shinkansen and local trains); and via Hiroshima Airport (30 mins or about 18 km away using taxi). Since this was always part of a bigger trip to Western Japan or Kyushu, we found Hiroshima Airport access to be most comfortable as we had luggage - took a local taxi directly from Hiroshima Airport to Tadanoumi Pier 忠海港. For 6 persons, we were able to reserve a Jumbo Taxi (which can seat 8) from the Airport and the cost for the short journey was Y7500. The taxi also took us directly to Tadanoumi Pier, compared to other transport options which involved taking local trains to Tadanoumi station, and then a 10 min walk with luggage in tow. If you are travelling with children or elderly, definitely consider coming from Hiroshima Airport if Ohkunoshima is your first stop upon arrival to Japan. Probably good to reserve a taxi in advance, although we were able to find one at short notice at the airport (15 mins wait). At Tadanoumi Pier you can buy ferry tickets to Ohkunoshima - very straight forward. The souvenir shop also stocks other cute paraphernalia which are not found on Ohkunoshima itself. ||||As it turned out, the Kure line from Hiroshima or Mihara to Tadanoumi Station was affected by the Okayama floods and I am glad we took this option, as we didn't need to take the local train. ||||To return back to the main land, we took the ferry from Ohkunoshima to Mihara using the Rabbit Line(ラビットライン). Again, a much more comfortable and hassle free option, as it took us only 30 minutes to reach Mihara (with a small stop in Sumami) and we cut short the hassle of taking the local train from Tadanoumi station. The ferry operates 5 times a day and costs Y1500/adult and Y750/child.||But note: it operates on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays only. We were fortunate as it turned out as we checked out on Saturday. Mihara is a shinkansen stop, and the station is 10 mins walk from the ferry pier. We stayed overnight at Mihara so this gave us more time to enjoy Ohkunoshima - we left on the 1:50 pm ferry. ||||If you like rabbits and don't want to rush, I highly recommend a 2 night stay at the resort, which is not fancy, but very authentic and quintessential Japanese. The meals are wonderful in terms of Japanese and Western variety - buffet for breakfast and dinner is included. We tried grilled live abalone (Y3000 each), and local beef. We also love the onsen and the coin laundry services. And - they now had wifi in the room too! Marked improvement over our last trip 2 years ago. || It was a relaxing trip to...
Read more01 July, 2018.||No, we did not stay at this hotel, but visited it, all the same.||We were looking at spending a day at the famous Okunoshima Island||in the Takehara district, Hiroshima Prefecture. This hotel is the||only one on this island, otherwise known as `Rabbit Island'. The||USP of the hotel is to spend a complete day with rabbits, while||dropping anchor at this hotel. Rabbits roam all around the island.||The hotel is centrally located, and relatively close to the||jetty: the only means of transportation to and from the island.||There is a regular bus service to and from this hotel, as well,||at regular intervals. The hotel itself is close to the sea shore||on the island, and has a large grassy knoll right in front of it.||Unfortunately for us, we were not able to get a reservation at||this place (we were quite late in planning for this trip!), and||Sunday isn't exactly the day to expect to find accommodation||on the island, which is a visitor's paradise.||We made it a point to visit the hotel however, to soak in the ambience.||The first poitn we visited on landing at the island was...to take||the bus straight to the hotel.||The sea-facing rooms are a hit with visitors, we were told.||We patronised the Usanchu Cafe, which is located on the first||floor of the hotel. The first floor has curio shops in the middle||close to the reception area, and a cafe (Usanchu cafe) on one side, and a||restaurant (Usanchu restaurant) on the other.||The large grounds in front of the hotel||have shady palm trees, and benches...
