Ryokan Tanaka is simply wonderful. Staying here hearkens back to Japan's earlier days when families operated similar inns for many generations. This ryokan is traditional and beautifully maintained, with amazing local lacquerware on display. The rooms are what you expect for this sort of accommodation - small, bedroll on the floor, shared bathroom - but that only adds to the charm of your stay. I arrived to the smell of incense burning as the gracious hostess welcomed me warmly. The food, however, is out of this world. I have eaten amazing food around the world (I'm a fat foodie wanna-be), including some truly awesome seafood, and yet, I would rate dinner (and breakfast!) at Ryokan Tanaka as some of the absolute finest meals I have ever had. The dinner was truly spectacular in every way. I am not even sure of what every type of food was, but it was all clearly expertly prepared and the taste and texture was just out of this world. The first evening of my stay, the innkeepers drove us to a local traditional taiko drum performance and then brought us back to the inn. It was just awesome. I felt I had traveled back in time.||||I cannot say enough good things about this experience. If you want to be coddled in a luxury room and watch TV and use Wifi, this is not the place for you. If you want an authentic amazing traditional ryokan experience, including some of the best seafood in the world, then you will not find anything better than this place. I cannot wait to return and only hope they maintain their attention to the old...

Read moreTanaka was the nicest place we stayed in our month stay in Japan. The inside of the inn was gorgeous, the seafood dinner was the best we had in Japan, and we loved our private time (small additional cost) in their indoor and outdoor onsens. We felt the inn went out of their way to make sure there was a staff person with some English for us at check in, dinner, breakfast and bathing time, as many Japanese stay there. It was very good value for what we received. The fun morning market was within walking distance. Highly...
