Just returned from a 7-night stay here. We found this hotel to be comfortable and convenient with a friendly staff. The rooms are simple, but include a dining table and kitchen with a full-sized fridge, cooktop, coffee maker, and microwave. The beds were comfortably firm and we slept very well. The AC was more than cold enough.||This hotel is ideal for those who want to be close to the main surf break in Los Cerritos, which is where all the action is (a restaurant, surfboard and umbrella rentals).||If you're the sort of person who is happy having all the basics and doesn't mind things being a little rough around the edges, this place will work for you. If you are "high-maintenance" and expect everything to be perfect this is NOT the place for you.||Here are some particulars on what to expect:||STAIRS - This hotel is on a hillside and there are lots of stairs. Even if you have a room at the bottom of the complex, the restaurant, bar, and pool are at the top, so you will have to climb stairs. FYI - the penthouse rooms are above the bar, so they have the most steps from the bottom.||PARKING - On the dirt road at the bottom of the complex. There is usually plenty of parking, but if you show up on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, it may be tricky finding a close space because this is a popular area for beach parking, and weekends are busy. Spaces open-up again in the evening.||VIEWS - Yes, there is a half-built building (no present construction) that blocks part of the view, but you still have great views of the full length of Playa Cerritos.||BREAKFAST - A very basic breakfast is included daily... scrambled eggs with ham, huevos rancheros, or quesadillas, each with refried beans and tortillas. Basic omelettes and drinks are available for purchase.||RESTAURANT - They currently are not open for lunch. They are open for dinner and have a new chef who started last week. We had dinner here two nights and it was quite good. I liked the Mixta Salad and the Fajitas.||BUGS - there was the occasional roach in the kitchen. We kept things clean, put all the food in the fridge, and twisted the garbage bags shut at night, and this seemed to minimize the "visits".||INTERNET - Wifi in the rooms was adequate, though it would come-and-go a little. I usually could get a good TelCel (GSM) signal outside for AT&T roaming... it was very good out the back door of the hotel room.||RESERVATIONS - The best rate I found was on their website. It took them a few days to get back to me... I eventually had to call them. But I saved over $200 so it was worth it.||The bottom line is that this place is well-priced for what you get, and very convenient...
Read moreDO NOT STAY HERE. This place is terrible. It's a long story. On the way to check in we smelled a bad sewer smell. I didn't worry about it at the time. We walked up to the bar to check in because the sign on the office down below said to do so. Get to the bar, and I immediately got a weird vibe. It was a little dirty, and much less nice than the pictures showed, and the staff seems unprepared to deal with check ins. And they demanded we pay up front, another strange thing. I should have known and said NO at this point. No one speaks english at all either which added difficulty. Then we run the credit card in the janitor closet? We get into our room which is the upper unit of the lowest building next to the road. We go out on the balcony and all I smell is sewer smell again. I look around the corner and I can see the septic tank is above ground, against the building we are in. I can see they spray-foamed the lids shut to keep the smell in, which clearly did not work. The discharge water is running across the access road to the beach. I realize they can't use the office building they built because of the smell, and now have everyone go upstairs. The smell is so bad we can't open the sliding door at all, or even use the balcony. Later on we decided to go ask for a refund and go somewhere else. I went to talk to the staff, and I ended up on the phone with someone claiming to be the manager. I had the bartender come down and smell the smell and she agreed it was really bad. It was all a show though, because the spray foam, and the unused office tells me it is a known issue. In the end we got the runaround, and no refund. Not to mention the squatter surf camp directly behind our room. RV and tents of clearly long term use, looking right at our door. It did not feel safe. They have a massive design problem with the septic that isn't going to be fixed anytime soon and will likely get worse. We left the hotel and emailed the manager as instructed and never got our money back for the nights we didn't even stay there. This place is a joke. Do...
Read moreTwo girlfriends and I had booked a 5 night stay at the Cerritos Beach Hotel and were looking forward to having a relaxing stay next to the beach. We weren't expecting anything fancy, but were drawn to the location of the hotel and the photos, although quite deceiving. We reserved the room for 3 of us, but noticed that the room only had 1 towel, no wash clothes or hand towels and although there is a small kitchen, there were no cups or silverware. This of course is not the worst thing, however still annoying. We planned to talk to them in the morning, since it was late when we checked in and no one was able to help us that evening.
Our deciding factor to leave was when we found blood spots on the pillow of one bed and the sheet of the other bed. I understand that this could happen, but it is still unnerving to have to sleep in sheets that feel and look dirty. At the time there was no one to talk to get the bedding changed, so we had to deal with it till the morning. With COVID still in full swing and two of us being healthcare workers, we felt that it was safer to book a new spot for the rest of our stay.
The person working the desk in the morning was not helpful after we explained our situation and how we were unhappy. Although we had paid in full the night before when we checked in, they said we would still have to go through booking.com. It was a stressful and disappointing way to start our vacation. It can be hard to book a place to stay when traveling somewhere far from home, but it makes it worst when the photos posted are very deceiving. I hope this review can help others in the future.
Also, just a heads up, the beds were far from comfortable. I'd say a step up from a cot...
