In April I traveled in Morocco with 3 friends. We found Retour au Calme Guest House online with great reviews. We were in a bit of a hurry, so we drove straight there and managed to book a room for 4 for one night. We then wanted to make a reservation for additional 3 days, but unfortunately all their rooms were already taken, so the owner proposed that we stay in the saloon, which she guaranteed they do not use and would be for our use exclusively. We gladly agreed.||||So in the morning, we moved all our luggage and part of our climbing gear to the saloon and went to Todra Gorge for a day of climbing. We returned to the hostel at about 9 pm exhausted and stressed after a hard day on the rock, expecting we would be able to go straight to bed. When we arrived, we noticed that the door to our room/saloon was wide open and inside were people enjoying dinner as if they were guests in a restaurant. Our luggage was pushed to the side and the owner was serving guests in our room. We caught him carrying platters of food and asked him what was going on. He arrogantly replied that if we had a problem with what was happening, we could take our things and go find a different hostel. He told us there were many other hotels in Tinghir. He seemed very threatening, so we did not want to provoke potential problems. This shocked us because in the beginning the hostel seemed welcoming and relaxed. So at 10 pm we were forced to go out and look for a different place to sleep.||||All in all, we strongly do not recommend Retour au Calme Guest House. This was one of the worst experiences we had in Morocco. The owners disregarded our agreement completely and threw us out on the street exhausted in the middle...
Read moreMy husband and I have stayed in this lovely hostel for two nights. It is conveniently located in Tinghir a 5 minutes walk from the bus station. I have to say it is one of the best places considering it's style and atmosphere that we have been to so far in Morocco. There is a large indoor and outdoor common area and a nice vegetable garden. So it's perfect to socialize with fellow travellers. The internet is so fast you can use the video while on skype (!!). Also everything was very clean (bedsheets, common bathroom etc.). Unfortunately it was pretty empty while we were there, but maybe it was also just the low season...
The staff is super friendly and helpful, particularily Murat, who is really a little sunshine. He spent a lot of time with us, teaching us Berber words etc. Also quite importantly while they offer to help you arrange excursions, they are fairly descrete about it and will not push you to contract any tour with them (we did everything individually and they were still helpful, telling us where to catch local busses etc.). Having travelled in Morocco for a while we know that some people behave very different. Also the breakfast ist delecious! When there was a misunderstanding about the hostelworld booking we managed to solve it with the owner in a friendly and respectful way and I am sure they will improve the description to avoid such sorts of incidents in the future.
Summing up: A good price and a nice and relaxing stay in a friendly atmosphere. I can clearly recommen...
Read moreI don't think I can put into words how absolutely refreshing our stay here actually was. It is a bit difficult to get to, as I had to park on the lower side right near the cliff edge. Once I walked over to the door and pressed the doorbell, we were met by a very hospitable lady though she did not speak English. The local Berber people were very accommodating and helped us show her the reservation and enter the hotel. Once we were inside, we were introduced to Mona, who does speak some English and was able to get us situated.
Dinner was served on the terrace, which was absolutely beautiful. Both the kefta tagine and the pastille were the best we had in all of Morocco. So good in fact, we requested some for take out as we were to continue our journey the next day.
The rooms were more than amiable, allowing us to get the best sleep we had gotten so far on our trip (we had stayed in Marrakesh and In the Atlas before this). The washrooms were clean and the shower was hot. The wifi was an ample 100mbps, allowing us to catch up with family and social networking with ease. All in all, would recommend this hotel to everyone again. No need to look any further, the hospitality at this hotel is unmatched in Tinghir, and possibly in...
