Beautiful spot for overnight camping. BUT..... Unfortunately, right after town wardens left: From late in the evening until five in the morning, bunch of intoxicated people drove/drift around the camping area, while passing around people sleeping in their campervans those intoxicated people have been shouting, yelling with intension to wake up sleeping people. From what I ve heard they have been yelling "hope you are going to have a bad niiiight" laughed laudly like some Joker movie characters and then they manage to leave before morning wardens have been arriving. I think they were the same people I saw that day at downtown near the local swimming pool parking area. Already during the day, they tried to provoke verbal conflicts with people. Our second night has been without this craziness.

NOTE=there are 4 parking spots for NON SC cars right at the parking lot next to the toilets. If you are NON SC park just at those 4 yellow marked spots. If you are SC van, dont park at those 4 spots for NON SC cars. You can get...

There are 4 spaces for non-self contained vehicles, and lots of room for self contained vehicles. There's toilets, and even a sink for washing up.

However, some young locals were parked by our camper, with their lights on, being very loud and obnoxious from about 10, until 1 am. When another camper confronted them, asking them to simply move to the other side of the lake, they got very aggressive and started threatening her and hitting her car. We called the police but the locals left before they got there. It felt very unsafe and we didn't...

This is a fantastic spot and the council are very generous in allowing freedom camping here but on the Monday night we stayed we experienced until way after dark a constant stream of very noisy cars continually driving in to the beach car park and out again as fast and noisy as they could. It was a big worry when some of them also drove around the parking area with the risk of them hitting our vehicle. There were also jet skis and speedboats racing around the lake. This all put us off staying another night so we went elsewhere which was...

Turned up to freedom camp in the dark last night. Woke up to a $200 ticket even though the sign says freedom camping. When we turned up there was many other vans in the same situation in the dark that had set up for the night also. After reading the note they added to the ticket I walked over to one of the lightly painted parks that there is no way of seeing in the dark to see that the red van in the pictures had a ticket and they were parked in an apparent designated park. Come on guys whats going on. We will definitely be fighting this ticket

Really decent of New Plymouth District Council to provide this picturesque spot for both self- and non-self-contained campers. After dark update: ruined by the out of control boy racers with their illegally loud ‘mufflers’. Whole camp was awakened more than once - babies crying, lights coming on everywhere. C’mon NP: crack down on these eggs. Definitely not conducive to visitors, especially not repeat visitors. Unless they’re deaf or super heavy sleepers.
