Esquires Cafe New Plymouth — Restaurant in North Island

Offended, insulted and never going back!!! Food arrived overcooked and dry. I asked if I could have something else .I had ordered quiche and it was extremely dry and chewy. Staff member said that she would have to get manager. Manager came out from back and launched straight in with the statement "I can't give you a refund". I said that I was aware of that so could they replace it with something else. She then came back with "Where would we be if everyone half ate something and then brought it back to counter for a refund". I argued that seeing as it was a slice of quiche I had thought that maybe the end of it was dry so had tried some of the centre but it was no different. I pointed out that it being a quiche would surely mean there would be some moisture in it. I again asked for it to be replaced and eventually after some to-ing and fro-ing with the manager due to her reluctance to give me anything in exchange I said "Just give me a sandwich". I am blown away by the total lack of customer service. It is not cheap to eat there. $42.00 for 2 coffees, 2 cakes and a slice of quiche and a Filo pastry, so I feel I was quite within my rights to complain. We will not be back and have told several people about this incident. I need to note that the actual person that served me originally was very nice. Very disappointed. I ordered smashed avo on ciabata $21. The bread was small, very thinly sliced and covered in tomato sauce!!! and olive oil. Next was a pile of frilly green lettuce topped with two decent sized tomato slices. But where was the avo ? Oh on the very top was maybe a heaped tablespoon of smashed avo mixed with something. It didn't even taste like avocado. While I was eating, a woman at the next table had her coffee served with little effort to put it on the table. It was half on half off so that as the waiter let go, the cup and saucer tipped off the table, spiling coffee on the table and the floor and splashing the customers' pants. There was more to that story but it's not mine to tell. I won't be back as there are other options nearby. It was our second time dining in this Cafe and once again not very good, a table of 5 we had to wait half an hour for our meals and they came out all different times we had all finished eating and my mums meal came out last, her meal was cold and her chips weren't cooked, eggs were hard, our coffee wasn't good. Last time we had to clear our own table and they left the spray bottle and cloth there for us clean up so we could have a clean table to eat at. While they had workers standing behind the counter doing nothing. Every table that was empty had dirty plates etc, not one clean table to sit at. I do not recommend these guys! We won't be going back.. we are from Hawera get better meals and service at McDonald's. Very disappointed. 1 star is...
