MacKenzie Motels — Hotel in South Island

We were surprised at how TINY the unit was. The bed was really comfortable and the shower and toilet were really good. Everything was clean. BUT - there were no cooking facilities, unless you count a toaster, small microwave and a kettle! There were no cupboards in the "kitchenette" area. As well, the only water source for dishwashing, for filling the kettle and for drinking was the bathroom handbasin. A bowl for washing dishes was provided, but nowhere suitable to do it. There was no power point adjacent to the only mirror - for shaving. There was one lounge chair and no room for another. The unit was relatively expensive - more than most one bedroom units (MUCH bigger) that we have booked elsewhere. We were given no payment options, so had to pay extra for credit card payment. 30 mins drive from Lake Tekapo but more affordable. There is a liquor shop and grocery store 3 mins walk from the motel. The rooms were spotless, airy, bright and comfortable. The kitchen facilities in each room comes with a stove, oven, hot water jug and microwave all modern and clean. The site also has cooking and eating utensils in each room making the place a great and affordable alternative. There are private decks for each room with benches and seating for BBQ and alfresco dining as well as a full dining table for 4 inside the rooms. Well thought out and beautifully presented, the owner is also very friendly and knowledgeable about the area and is happy to provide ideas. Overall, great place for the price...

We found this place by chance late in the day, while travelling through. We had our dog with us, and I asked if it was okay for our dog to sleep in the car outside the unit. The friendly proprietor agreed, but added that there is a little fenced yard, and that we were welcome to take our dog through the unit and let him loose there. Well, it was perfect - our outside dog often chooses to sleep on a covered deck at home rather than in his kennel, so he settled in so nicely we left him there with his own bedding to sleep.
