I'd made a reservation based on reviews, thinking I'd be driving a rental car on this North Peru portion of my 2016 trip. Instead I wound up with a hired car and driver (which was a GOOD thing!!).||||We had a street address for the hotel, but there was some confusion, since the hotel and the associated restaurant are about a block apart! But my driver sorted things out, and even got to park his vehicle (actually the relatively new car of the owner of his business!) behind the heavy steel bars of a gate into the one-car courtyard of the hotel.||||The hotel itself is well-maintained. In fact, when we were there two of the front (street-side) rooms were closed for updates and the smell of fresh paint pervaded the place. (The manager/owner explained that tourist season was delayed, in part because of national elections that had just happened.)||||My room was clean and comfortable, but cold. There is no heat in any rooms, and this is a town at about 10,400 feet ASL. But bed-covers can work miracles and I had a comfortable night's sleep.||||I'll include the restaurant, since they operate under joint ownership, though in separate buildings on different-but-adjacent streets. I had two meals there, dinner the first night and breakfast in the AM (not included with the room rate). The food was good, and the wait staff was responsive to my requests for menu adjustments of a vegetarian nature. Restaurant also not heated, so I kept my North Face quiltie on...
Read moreWe had dinner and breakfast at Hostal Restaurante Chavin Turistico. It wasn’t busy the night we went there and the service was good. Our waiter spoke only limited English and we speak only limited Spanish, but he was helpful and friendly. We split the huge Sopa de Pollo (very tasty and filling), then my Trucha al Ajo was really excellent … the trout was huge, perfectly cooked and fell right off the bones. I assume it was caught locally? Two rivers meet in Chavin so maybe it was from there. My wife liked her Lomo Saltado and sweet cookies for desert. The location is convenient … around the corner from the hostal, and short walking distance from the Chavin ruins. We also stayed at the hostal, which I am not reviewing here, although I can say that the three-floor hostal has a tiny gated courtyard with room for one car where we parked. No one is on staff there … you ring the doorbell and someone comes around the corner from the restaurant to let you in. We were the only people in the building that night. It was pretty good, but not outstanding like the trout dinner! In the morning, we walked over to get the Deseyuno Americano with fried egg, Peruvian flat bread & marmalade, juice and cafe con leche (they had to run to the store for milk and by the time they got back the coffee was not hot). However, we liked the restaurant, food and staff a lot. There is no wifi there and they...
