I lived here 5 weeks doing a service project in Peru (and there were always peace corps volunteers that came and went bc of the discount!). There were about 30 people in my program also living here, or that came here for dinner, so we pretty much dominated the hostel. Now I would say that the wifi kinda sucks, compared to other wifi networks in the area. We were always leaving to get wifi and some days there was none at all. There are 3 networks currently available to guests but... Very slow. It only worked well when I was home sick. The staff does not speak English (if that's an issue for you) but they're VERY kind, helpful, friendly and genuinely cared about us. The best part of McCallum's has to be the food! AMAZING. I'm a vegan and they catered to me! Different vegan meals the entire 5 weeks I was here. My food was amazing and everyone else's food also looked delicious. Doña Elouisa and Julia are amazing cooks, so eat here if you can. When we came down with GI bugs they always made us special sick soups. Laundry was S./10 per bag. Our toilet clogged almost daily and sometimes filled our room with sewer smells but I think we were the only ones with that problem (room 201... You've been warned!) nevertheless, Señor Manuel always fixed it right after we told him. There's a lovely living area with hammocks. Very clean. I think we all enjoyed our stay, if nothing else for the great staff...
Read moreI arrived in Huanchaco and some random Scottish guy (presently living in Huanchaco) referred me here. You couldn't find more helpful and friendly hosts if you tried - they just simply can't do enough. I had the same experience as some other reviewers here where they would just drop whatever they're busy with and attend to your request.||The room I had was simple but very clean and there was hot water. It had a desk and chair so I could work there although I preferred to sit at the tables outside. The wifi was all good when I was there, so was able to work without any hiccups.||This is sufficiently far away from the bustling beach area but close enough that you can just take a walk down.||There might be other nicer looking places around but I doubt you'll get the attention and service you'll get here - what more do you need when you have that and a...
Read moreI stayed there a few weeks working for a charity. Usually, the clients are surfers, I am not. It is a bit off the central line, you may find more ambient hotels at the front line. But it is 5 minutes walk from the shore, anyway. There is the best bakery in the town on the corner of Los Ficus street and front. The staff, the family, were very helpful and nice, even though not everybody spoke English (well, that is the regular thing... you need some Spanish in those parts, I did not have a problem with it). Very safe and reliably place. Most problems were with the internet, when everybody got on the net in the evenings... as well as with hot water in these hours. Otherwise, no problem. They cooked good food (and tried to do something new every day, although there was no menu.) There are tons of such places in Huanchaco, but this one I lived in,...
