I loved my stay at Maimara Hotel. I stayed a total of five nights on both ends of a climbing trip. I was treated more like a guest in someone's home than an anonymous hotel visitor. Jaime and his wife own the hotel, and Piero, the son, helps run it are all wonderful people. They are very friendly and accommodating. Piero speaks English and responds to WhatsApp.
The rooms are clean and nicely furnished, and the beds are warm and comfortable. My room had a small west facing balcony with one chair. If you poke your head out, you can see Huascaran. The even number floors have a common sitting area, and the top floor is a glassed-in breakfast room with views of the surrounding hills and mountains. The open floor plan gives lots of light to the upper floors and progressively less as you go down.
The free breakfast included scrambled eggs, fresh fruits and yogurt, local bread with meat and cheese, cereal, coffee, tea, and fresh juices.
When traveling in foreign countries, I like to stay in locally owned and operated establishments over western chains. (I don't think there are any chain hotels in Huaraz anyway). I chose this hotel because it is not in the center of town. Other hotels in Huaraz have a reputation of being noisy. This is located in a quiet neighborhood. It is about 15-minute walk to the central part of town, however there are some nice restaurants and cafes in the north part of Huaraz that are laid back, not overrun with tourists, and closer than the center of town.
Like most small locally owned hotels in South America, the hot water is inconsistent. It takes patience for it to heat up.
I would absolutely stay here again and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a...
Read moreMe and my wife stayed at Maimara in late August 2025 for six nights and really enjoyed our stay. The entire house and all rooms are very well maintained. The interior design is very tasteful and in very good shape, making you feel cozy right away. It actually reminded me a bit of the hotels in the Austrian Alps with all the wooden interior. The room was very bright and well furnished. The bed, sheets and pillows were very comfortable. And we really appreciated the built-in heater in the room on some colder evenings. The breakfast was very good as well with fresh fruits, great bread and cheese. Obviously, this comes at a somewhat higher price compared to other hotels in town. The owner and his son (who speaks great english by the way) are super friendly and helpful. They not only gave us lots of recommendations for day-hikes bit actually drove us to the collectivo for free once. Only tiny downside is its location. You have to walk approx. 20 min to the central market. But it's super-easy to catch a taxi or tuk-tuk at the main road which will take you to the center for 4-6 Soles. Overall, we can absolutely...
Read moreVery friendly hosts - the young manager spoke great English. The bed was good and the room nice enough. New bed sheets and towels. The hotel inside looked very nice - wooden decoration etc. Most annoying thing is that the hotel is always locked - so you have to ring the bell to get in or out of the hotel and that can take a while for staff to come to open the door. The hotel has 5 levels - it is a lot of up and down...for guests and the hotel staff to come down to open the door for you. It is not very central and you need a tuktuk to get to town. Quite a walk to the next restaurant. Quite expensive for what you get. Not good value. We changed hotel after 3 days - payed less than half and had a better included breakfast and no more waiting for someone to...
