If I was to rate the hostel and only the first part of the jungle tour I would give 5 stars but the last part of the tour was pure chaos.||||I stayed in the hostel for one night which was fine. The bed was great, the room clean and breakfast was nice. I had booked a jungle tour (4 days and 3 nights), including one night at a local family house at lake sandoval to be able to see the sunset there and do some early morning walk or swim. ||Unfortunately right from the beginning there was some chaos as nobody explained to me what the trip would be. The homepage says you leave Puerto Maldonado at 0830, then they informed me we leave at 0930, in the end we left at 10, and I had to hop on the cargo bed of the four-by-four pick up for the dirt road to the river (nobody told me about this, it was just assumed I was fine with this...)||||The stay at the Collpas Tambopata Inn was really really nice, the room was incredible with a hammock right out to the jungle and a big bed. Food was delicious (even for veggies), the guide really experienced and nice (perfect english!). When I asked them what comes next, first nobody could tell me and then the send me back to Puerto Maldonado where the driver left me at a (random) travel agency. I had thought, based on the information online, we would be going straight to the lake by boat from the lodge but no... I asked for information but they just send me to yet another travel agency where I asked if anybody had organized my night stay at Lake Sandoval but no... In the end they took me back to the hostel where the administrator /manager told me they could not get me on the over night trip to the lake because there was no group (left?) or no space for me and it would have been "too expensive to send me there alone" (from the lodge I guess). So they could give me back my money or I could go on an "adventure tour" and a day tour to the lake. I choose the latter because I had a flight only the next day. The hostel (Paradise something) at the edge of the Rio Madre de Dios I then stayed in for the night was basic, the food was bad the first day, excellent the second (seemed they ran out of supplies). The guide was good and we had a nice time at the lake in the morning. ||What I paid for this trip in the end (445 USD) was way too much, they did not want to give me any refund, and they were unable to communicate anything in advance. I would have been fine with changes to the itinerary if these were communicated in advance (for example I would have preferred to stay at the first lodge, but they did not give me the choice) but the team was unorganized and the manager blamed others for the lack of information. ||||All in all the hostel & lodge and the trips are great in content but make sure that everything is in the open and communicated, especially when you are a...
Read moreSurprisingly good place to stay in, especially considering the price. Simple but clean and has all the necessities, and you can book trips to the rainforest.
The guided trips I bought from Tambopata hostel were also good, especially the three days/two nights trip to Collpas Tambopata Inn. I was first suspicious about booking the trip from the hostel because they couldn't really tell much about it, not even the name of the lodge or what the trip actually includes. However, it was a positive surprise - the lodge was very comfortable and the three days included a lot of nice walks in the rainforest, a couple of boat trips and some canoeing. We saw e.g. monkeys, parrots, caimans, capybaras, turtles and lots of plants, insects and butterflies. Food was also good and there were good vegetarian options available. (It's weird they don't communicate better about the trips - I almost didn't buy it at all because the guy who was supposed to sell them didn't tell me almost anything. I'm glad I did however.)
When I was planning my stay I didn't really know how it all works, so I booked several nights at this hostel and thought I will do excursions from there and come back for the night. However when I got there I realised that there is literally nothing to see in the city of Puerto Maldonado and it's kind of small and shabby - it's just a base where you can book overnight trips to the rainforest lodge. So, no need to book more than one night. I had booked several nights but luckily they compensated for the price of the two nights I spent at the lodge, as I had already paid for them.
After I got back from the lodge I also did a one-day excursion to lake Sandoval. It was nice but not a must, if you don't have time for everything. Also, if you're short on time I think the Collpas lodge could be done as a two day/one night trip as well, although they don't give it as an option unless you...
Read moreThis place is more expensive than other hostels in the area; only cold showers (even in the city). Close to a club that blasts music till 2am in the morning. Breakfast was basic coffee, fruit, cereal and bread. Generally, the rooms were basic and nothing to shout about.
However, the LAUNDRY is the worst part of this hostel. Price per kg is 8 soles/ kg - this is overpriced. There' a laundry place down the street that's 5 soles/kg. Next, they said my laundry will be done the next day by 9am but both our laundry were not there. They said that the laundry will be there at 12pm instead. After lunch, we checked in at 2pm and only my friend's laundry was there. We needed to be at the at the airport by 3pm and they had to call their contact who said that they would be there by 2.30pm. At 2.30pm, they did not show up. Only at 2.45pm did they show up. I had to rush to pack all my things and they did not even offer to send us to the airport even after we explicitly told them that we needed to be there by 3pm. Suddenly, the staff couldn't speak English and when we left the hostel, the staff mysteriously disappeared from the front counter. Unacceptable customer service.
Will NOT recommend. Come to PM to book your hostels. You can find some for half the price (starting 15 Soles/person for a basic room...
