The Mercearia offers hotel rooms above what was once a grocery store in central Ponte de Lima, just behind the Parish Church (whose clock chimes and bells are mercifully silent during the night). Delicious ample cold buffet breakfasts are served in the former shop, with antique shop fillings and shelves stocked with wines and historic dry goods as charming background. The comfortable rooms upstairs are named and colour-themed around groceries; soap, sugar, red peppers, chocolate etc. There is some interesting and tastefully-delicate decorative metalwork in wall niches as you go up the stairs.
