Having climbed the narrow stairs to the first-floor reception area our first impression was of the smoky atmosphere however, having negotiated a warren of spotlessly clean steps and corridors we were pleased to find that the non-smoking double room that we had booked smelt far fresher. Our room was on the second floor overlooking the street and, although small was clean and cheery with the furniture painted and decorated in the Alentejo style that seemed to be used throughout the hotel. There was a small bathroom, air-conditioning and a television with local channels. During the evening rush hour many vehicles passed through the narrow street below with the noise from each one echoing up to our room however there was very little traffic at night and we slept well. A basic breakfast was included in the price. If you want simple accommodation in the city centre at a reasonable price this might well prove suitable. The old part of Portalegre consists of a maze of steep, narrow streets many of which are one-way. If you are arriving by car take a look at Google Maps. The simplest way to reach the hotel is to turn off Rua 1° Maio on to Rua de Elvas which has a white sculpture of a labourer sowing seed at its foot. About 100m up the hill the third narrow street on the left is Rua 19 de Junho (unmarked) and the hotel is just a few metres on the right. Having dropped luggage the Praça do Municipio is reached a little further on where you may be lucky enough to find a metered space, otherwise turn left down Rua do Arco to return to, and cross, Rua 1° Maio where there is a free car park.
