We stayed for 1-night in Sortelha at O Cantinho da Ana (70 €), an old stone building located just off the main road at the bottom of the hill. The walled medieval village & castle of Sortelha were located above the village, perhaps a 10 min walk from Ana's. ||||Ana's was very atmospheric, a stone house that, while fully renovated with all of the conveniences, still had the feel of a medieval farmhouse. The main room, which housed the entry & sitting area and kitchen, had low wood-beamed ceilings, wood floors, stone accent walls and an end wall of huge stones under and around the space-heater fireplace. The kitchen, while basic with cloth covers over the shelves, had all of the modern conveniences – refrigerator, microwave, stove-top – but also an array of old, heavy cast-iron pots and pans by the fireplace. The bedroom was spacious, with a large bed & side tables and a full stone wall with half-stone accent walls. The bathroom was of moderate size with a reasonable shower and small vanity. Internet was available and the signal strong, and there was a small wall-mounted TV in the corner.||||The only negative about the place was it could feel a bit cramped to some, especially with the very limited outside light and the lack of an outside seating space (we took some chairs out into the alley, and the other rooms above were on a patio with some seating). However, these negatives were also the features that created that atmospheric medieval farmhouse feel, so you have to decide what is important to you. ||||Ana's provided a huge amount of food for breakfast – fruits, cheeses, ham, prosciutto, coffee, bread, biscuits – plenty for us for dinner as well. Which was good because, at this time of year, Sortelha was not particularly active – the walled city had 3-4 restaurant/bars, but none were open while we were there. There was a restaurant just down, but its location on the road was not particularly attractive. ||||So, for an afternoon at the village and an evening enjoying the ambiance of an old stone house, Ana's was a good choice for us. It definitely delivered good value...
Read moreA little off the normal path, but what a delight. These quaint casitas were like small French farm houses. The old stone building has been recently renovated into these lovely cottages. Multi-room and well equipped to fix your own meals ao have breakfast. Private and quiet -- we loved it. Ana even came over from another village to check on us. Of all of the places that we stayed in on a two week trip to Portugal, this was the nicest. Right down the mountain from the...
Read moreA real gem! These are rustic but very comfortable accommodations. They also provide a fully stocked kitchen for making breakfast and delivered fresh bread first thing in the morning. The guest house is just a few minutes' walk from Sortelha, which also contained a nice restaurant for dinner. Overall, this village stay was a real highlight of our week in...
