Chateau St Cloud — Hotel in La Digue

Lovely colonial historic building set amidst a lush garden away from the main town road and hustle bustle of the tourists. It is a quiet location but you need some form of transport to get to the restaurants or beaches. There is bicycle rental available. The room we chose was a Superior over looking the swimming pool. Several steps lead uo to the accommodation giving it a good vantage point over the garden and was one of the last rooms to have sun when it sets. It was spacious and old colonial style. Bed was comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. The bathroom was spacious but the shower needed a little updating. There was a spacious veranda. Staff were friendly, accommodating and engaged in conversation . The owner was a very likeable sixth generation of the original owner. The dining experience wasn't uplifting. The room was dark and very lacking in soul. The food was average but would benefit from labelling so you know what is what. Beverages in particular wine were OK but not to a 'Chateau' standard.||There was one concern regarding a health and safety issue. There were a number of mosaic tiles missing from the swimming pool especially on the edge of the steeps leading into the pool. A lovely forested property 15 minute bike ride from the beach. Several of the rooms are up on the hill so the hike can take a while if you are not in shape. Views are of the palm trees. The pool is nice. Our difficulty in rating this property is two fold... several of the staff are very unhappy and boarder line rude. When on holiday you want pleasant people. Terry and Jenna could not have been more personalable but Francesca and the woman cooking eggs in the morning are miserably unhappy. We suspect this could be tied to the management of the property but can’t say for sure. In our opinion the food is horrible. We’ve tried to think of another way to describe it but that’s where we are. When we were there breakfast and dinner were buffets. The food was bland and unappealing. Each morning our eggs were either undercooked or over cooked. Our last breakfast they served me a burnt omelet. Fortunately, we were able to take a cab and go out for dinner a couple of nights. Also, we thought it odd that they rented out tables at lunch for the locals who were not staying at the hotel to have a buffet lunch and then use the pool. Servizio lento e disattento, con dimenticanze al tavolo ben due volte in tre giorni. Colazione molto scarsa. Di dolce puoi mangiare crepes e pane con marmellata e basta. Niente yogurt, torte o croissant. Un succo di frutta, spesso finito e rifornito con i loro tempi. Varietà di frutta inesistente, solamente due, in genere arancia (o polpelmo) e melone (o papaya). Ogni tanto c'è di più ma vanno via facilmente e non vengono riforniti. Cena, solitamente c'è una piccola zuppa e un piatto principale senza possibilità di scelta a 35€ bevande escluse. Quando c'è il buffet costa di più, 45€ circa e la scelta e limitatissima. Circa tre piatti come antipasti (insalate o poco più) e tre piatti come principali. Nep menù a la carte invece c'è la possibilità di scegliere ma tutto sovrapprezzato. Per fare un'esempio una bottiglia d'acqua costa 66 rupie, circa 5 € (e non è ne Acqua Panna ne una bottiglia in vetro) e un piatto in media è sui 350 (26€). I teli per la piscina non si possono prendere dal bar adiacente ma dalla reception che non è vicina, dove capita che non c'è nessuno e ti fanno aspettare nonostante le sollecitazioni. Sulle biciclette, le nostre erano già incluse nella suite quindi prenotate da mesi. E il primo giorno abbiamo ricevuto una bici con la catena arrugginita caduta più di una volta. Cosa pericolosa sui saliscendi dell'isola. Le camere non sono proprio profumatissime e hanno difetti tra cui un condizionatore molto rumoroso (se si abbassa la potenza della ventola) e un letto che al minimo movimento cigola moltissimo (mai visto nella mia vita un letto così). Per fortuna abbiamo il sonno pesante ma i galli dell'hotel, liberi, che cantano ininterrottamente notte e giorno possono dar fastidio. Suite Honeymoon con vasca, sporca all'arrivo di macchie gialle e mai pulita per l'intero soggiorno. Per non farsi mancare nulla, a cena mia moglie è stata punta da un ragno (non velenoso ma molto doloroso) che aveva trovato la sua sistemazione sotto il tavolo, probabilmente da tempo. Checkout un po' angosciante. Ti obbligano a scrivere una recensione su camera, personale, reception e agente di viaggio di fronte al receptionist prima di poter pagare. Ho provato a dire che non avrei scritto nulla ma non era possibile. In genere è buon costume lasciare un foglio in stanza da compilare in serenità e da ricevere con discrezione, senza osservare il cliente in modo controllante. Darei 3 stelle per la piscina che è vivibile. Però per 400€ a notte con cena, consiglio di non andarci o di stare a Praslin e spostarsi in giornata a La Digue in escursione o di...
