Penzión Hradby — Hotel in Prešov

I stayed in this penzion in 2019, before COVID, and I was very pleased with the service, given the low offer and competition the city hotel industry had to offer at that point. I rated my stay with FOUR starts.

I went back to stay here in June 2023 and revised my rating to 2 stars due to the following rasons:

I called them to get a reservation, and the owner offered me an apartment "right next door", which I thought was fine, as who really cares whether the room is in the same building or the next one.

As I arrived at the hotel at mid-night, the owner (Veronika, a very nice lady) met me by the door, and she took me to the apartment in a car. It was obvious that the apartment was not "next door". However, with the warm weather outside, I thought it would be fine. When we arrived, I learned that the apartment is in the attic - also fine. However, there were three major issues that I wish I knew about. The internet connection/WIFI is a big issue. The signal is available at one bar and only in certain areas of the apartment. The shower is a big problem, as the attic roof cuts through the shower and you cannot really stand there. You need to basically squat and shower by body parts. AND, the hot water - it's getting cold in literally 5 minutes - not sure what type of heater they use. In my three-day stay in this pernzion/apartment - no one came to do housekeeping or change the towels. On the very last day, at 8:30 am, the cleaning lady knocked on the door to come in. I asked her to come back later, as I was planning to check out by noon. In a few moments, I got a call from Veronika, saying that the checkout time was at 10:00. At this point, I got really upset - no internet, no decent shower, no hot water, no room service and now she wanted to kick me out early. With the reception 2 kilometers away and rainy weather outside, I asked her to come, pick my luggage up and drop it off at the reception. I would pick it up before the flight, by noon. She said that she was not in Presov. There is literally no place in this apartment building (which is a two storey house) where you can store your luggage, unless you leave it in the street. All-in-all, I stayed there until 11:30 and then left.

On the positive side, the lady at the reception was very nice. While she has limited English, she tries really hard to communicate, and she is super nice!

All-in-all, I am revising my rating from 4 stars in 2019 to 2 stars in 2023, and I am never going back to this penzion. The city has much better options to offer for the moment (unlike...

The proximity of the Penzion Hradby facility to the city's historic and beautifuly restored centre is most convenient indeed. Although the welcoming package was not provided, it does not exist (a good city map was absenting too), a good tasty coffee brew was curteously provided free of charge. Apart from the window's wide parapet the room itself was sufficiently clean and deodorized, the twin-size bed comfortable too. The smallish number of shortcomings of the facility's interior accounts for insuffciently heated room, noisy refrigirator, TV programming that cannot access any channels in a non-Slovak language (eg. BBC, CNN, al-Jazeera or some others), no instructions how to operate its remote control devise should the guest be a non-Slovak person, a bathroom mirror is positioned a little too high for a shorter person to shave (males) or to apply a makeup for female guests and, finaly, the bathroom amenities were limited just to a general washing body loation. Choice of breakfast items was agreeable and all very fresh, and so was the coffee. Regretably, the seating arrangement is not comfortable enough to eat at, while too close to the reception desk. A free morning press was a nice touch but, again, for a foreign non-Slovak speaking visitor not very useful. It was a trial night before our stay in December and I am happy that I wasted night rate now rather than over Christmas for whole week, as we were unable to even finish this night, escaped to sleep somewhere else in the end. Apartment look fine - renewed, modern. As a woman I liked nice corner bathtub, but in the end it was just that what I liked there. No Welcome pack information with Wi-Fi name and password (this was given at reception on tiny piece of paper and didn't work), no manual how to set Sat TV. Why they assume that everyone will know...Quite a large double bed, but with two single matrasess is no no for me as well as two small duvets. One light bulb missing from the night stand lamp. And when I rested my head on a pillow, I had nice view to cob webs all over the ceiling. Fridge in the room was good addition but was loud and disturbed my sleeping. Couldn't fall a sleep at all with another un- defined sound...maybe air con? Welcome drink on a house is a nice touch, if in the end for us, it wouldn't have been just very expensive fruit juice .
