It's a first: a hotel room without a pair of chairs and little table cum desk to sit and drink tea at. A so-called luxury room with one rocking chair! No bedside floor mats, curtains that don't close completely. Very small bath towels. No internal phone and no room service memu: when I inquired about room service at the front desk, I was told that room service was available, but the menu was kept at reception. No mention was made of this at check in. When I said that even if I ordered room service, where would I eat it, I was told that I could sit on the bed. Just picture this! Or on the stoep, suggested the other colleague unhelpfully - on a cold, windy night! I had called to book asked about facilities because I was coming with my 88 year old mother; there was a hard sell for the "luxury" rooms, because they were so comfortable and on the "ground" floor. Not true: they are in an annexe which involves a traipse through a garden - the pathways are uncovered, badly lit and uneven. The breakfast staff are very pleasant and helpful, as are the housekeeping staff. But the decision to clean furniture outside guests bedroom and store carpets on the stoep outside are highly questionable. There were other minor issues that I would normally overlook, but the pattern was off-putting. I did ask to move rooms, but was told there was nothing available. ( by the same person who suggested I eat outside on the stoep - it's called room service for a reason). Montagu is a lovely town, but I did not enjoy the Montagu Country Hotel and would not...
Read moreWe actually 'upgraded' hotels to stay here given it was my birthday and booked a Luxury Room. To the hotels credit they acknowledged my birthday on arrival but then led us out to the African Hut. I think they thought this was an upgrade of sorts even though its the same price as a Luxury Room. The Hut may well be traditional or quirky but its hard to keep warm, the bathroom old and cold and the road noise during the night was unbearable, such that our sleep for 2 nights was ordinary..it actually ruined my birthday. I think management was well intentioned but they should have asked before changing what we booked, which I suspect we would have been perfectly happy with based on the pictures. The hotel was full so no scope to change rooms. No issues with the staff and we had a decent dinner there both nights. Breakfast was a bit strange, the first morning it was made to order and the next morning a buffet selection, the former was much better. When we checked out no feedback was sought hence the commentary on this forum.||As an aside Montagu is probably a location where you only need to spend 1 night, albeit we did have a lovely tasting experience when we drove to Graham...
Read moreTo celebrate our silver wedding anniversary and my birthday, we handpicked this exquisite hotel as our designated romantic destination. From arrival to departure we received 5-star treatment from all the staff, including the owner/manager. We stayed in the beautifully-appointed Rondawel in the magical, lush garden. It was roomy, had a very comfortable double-bed, and the bathroom was equipped with a couple's shower as well as a jacuzzi-bath. We had all our breakfasts and dinners at the elegant Charleston's Restaurant, where the food was sumptious and the portions so large, that we couldn't finish our food! Special thanks to resident chef Werner Blom, who baked me one of famous chicken-pies - by special request without mushrooms - it was out of this world, and the delectable taste brought back wonderful childhood memories of authentic farm food, so rare nowadays! We also enjoyed an informative tour of Montagu in the stately blue 1956 Cadillac Sedan de Ville, which was hugely enjoyable with Cas our chauffer/guide, especially as we had perfect blue skies for photos! It was certainly a getaway that fulfilled all our expectations, and we shall definitely...
