We booked a villa (Villa Poppy, Menorca) at late notice (2 weeks before arrival) as a last-minute October half term break for us and the kids. We booked directly with the villa management company, 3 Villas. The management company were helpful with booking etc and were always reasonably quick to respond to messages. Most of their communication was through WhatsApp which was a little unusual to me, but worked well.
We arrived at the villa late at night and it was obvious that the property hasn’t been properly maintained for a substantial period of time.
The first thing we noticed on arrival was a damp musty smell, not overly offensive but noticeable. We put this down to the villa possibly not being occupied for a period. However, the corner of the main bedroom, near the window, had a strong urine smell that we could not get rid of.
We then found that the main bathroom had mould around the bath edges and mould spores all over both shower curtains. The shower hose was rusty and the shower head full of limescale. The bath tub itself also had yellow staining, like something had been spilled into the bath. The kids actually refused to use the bathroom.
Unfortunately, the separate shower room was no better. The tiles and grout had mould issues. Again, the hose and shower head were rusty, worse than the main bathroom. It appeared that someone had attempted to cover the dirty grout by putting new grout over the top of the old, but without digging out the old stuff first. This constantly broke up when using the shower and as it’s hard, just stuck in your feet.
It was very humid that first night, so we turned on the air conditioning in the main bedroom, only to find that it leaked water all over the bedroom floor.
These issues were reported to Amanda, at the villa management company immediately. The next morning cleaners arrived. It took just 20 minutes with some bleach to resolve the various mould issues. The shower hoses and heads were also replaced by the maintenance team and the air conditioning fixed. This does pose the question as to why this just wasn’t done in the first instance, before we arrived. This mould had clearly been building up for some time and the villa was apparently cleaned before we arrived.
We then had an issue with the main toilet, it constantly overflowed into the toilet pan causing the cistern to continuously refill. This was very noticeable at night because of the noise caused by the water supply to the cistern shutting off and back on.
The toilet was eventually replaced, 2 days before the end of our holiday, but the plumber was in and out of the property all day, crashing around, meaning we couldn’t relax.
One of the kitchen windows was broken and would not lock, meaning that the window could be opened by anyone from the outside. This is obviously a security issue that didn’t go unnoticed by our youngest child. This was never fixed.
2 sun loungers were also broken but were repaired during the week.
Every single mug in the cupboard was unusable with dirty rings inside. This all disappeared when they were cleaned properly, but I don’t feel I should have had to do this.
On the plus side, Amanda, at the management company was excellent and always responded quickly and actioned our issues. However, the holiday was ruined by the constant intrusion of maintenance workers.
This is potentially a great villa in a nice location, but the owner needs to spend a little money refreshing the property and dealing with the...
Read moreWe stayed for a month at Finca Son Pere, Menorca. We arrived late in the evening and struggled a bit to get in as everything was pitch black, we were using our phone torches to even try find the way up to the front door as it was so dark, a light being left on would have been helpful and welcoming. The first few days in the villa were pretty miserable due to it being so cold inside, the baby monitor said it was 11C. We asked for more heaters and were told that the owner said it would warm up quickly and to turn things off when we were using them, which is not what we wanted to hear with 3 miserable cold young children. We asked again the next day and 3Villas provided us with two more heaters which at least meant we didn’t have to carry the heater from room to room as we had been doing. After about a week (and being very close to asking to change villas) the villa started to warm up slowly. Obviously in season this would not be a problem but I think if renting out at the start or end more effort should be put into some form of heating. We were there for a month so we had time for it to warm up. Other than the temperature of the villa, it was stunning. The setting is spectacular and the views breathtaking. Due to being on top of a hill it was windy every day, but I think for the views it was worth it. There are chickens and cockerels next door and our children loved watching them. Some reviews I read had commented on poor WiFi but we were able to stream and watch programmes on it most of the time with no problem so that was better than I’d expected. The appliances were slightly outdated in the kitchen but when the microwave broke during our stay it was replaced the next day. 3 villas were very helpful during our stay and we would book through them again. Our main feedback would be to prepare the house slightly better when guests are arriving in terms of heating it up a bit when it’s been closed over winter, as it was a miserable first week of...
Read moreWe normally book via Airbnb or Booking, but this time via the agency directly. A mistake as it turned out. We booked two villas in the beginning of the season. When we arrived at the first villa "Arenal", nothing was prepared at all, although we have been the first guests of the season! The house was very cold, but there were no heaters, only one that didn't worked, one aircon not working. The first night we had to warm up the big house with 2 aircons, impossible. We are a family of 5 with 2 kids and a baby. So this first impression was not lucky at all. It was freaking cold with the stone floor. Unfortunately we had way more problems at the house. Wifi not working, nespresso machine not working properly, fridge very old and partly broken, toaster not working, toilette leaking, no diswashing equipment, no soap in the bathroom. Nothing was prepared at least for the the first days, but the most important thing for us... The bedding was not clean! Black hairs everywhere. This is a NO GO. Communication via mail with the agency awful, as everytime someone else is answering the mails and has no clue what was discussed beforehand..
Here I have to mention Carmen, the only person who helped us out in this situation. She replied promptly via WhatsApp and managed to get us 2 heaters and a toaster etc. So thumps up for her!
In general the villa Arenal was not worth the money at all, sadly as I have to say, because it has potential. The agency had plenty of time to prepare the house for the first guests...
