My wife and I recently spent a week at this lovely hotel. Having travelled from our previous resort, Zermatt, on the train, we took the ferry from the pier adjacent to Luzern station to Weggis, a pleasant fifty minute trip. The hotel is a 10-12 minute walk from the pier but the hotel’s taxi was waiting for us on arrival. A free bus does apparently run past the hotel – I’m not sure how often it runs because we walked every time, stopping at a lovely café midway on the way back after a day’s hiking for a coffee or beer and cake. Our room was on the third floor and had a lovely view of the lake and surrounding hills. The rooms have a balcony with two chairs and table and an awning which can be controlled from the room or by hotel staff centrally. The nearby street is very quiet at night. The hotel staff (reception, waiting staff and cleaners) were all very friendly, efficient and helpful. Our room wasn’t huge but was quite adequate, with two tub chair and another chair at a desk station. Having a safe was another advantage. The breakfast was excellent – everything one could desire (a minor point, the bacon was sometimes very pale, which is common in continental hotels). Everything was replenished on a regular basis. The evening meals were excellent, four varied courses each evening and five on the gala-dinner night. We left absolutely no food on our plates. The food was beautifully presented. Only on the Saturday night when the dining room was particularly busy was the service a little disappointing – it took thirty minutes for us to receive our second course. Other than that the service was first class. The hotel has a very nice heated indoor pool and a heated outdoor pool with a built-in spa bed. We took advantage of them but it pays to do so when they’re less busy. Towels and dressing gowns are provided in the bedrooms and access to the pools and leisure facilities and via floor -1. As part of our deal with Inghams we had a packed lunch each day, very tasty ham, cheese or salami and salad sandwiches, a biscuit and an apple. We would love to return to the Alexander Hotel one day.|You can travel by ferry to various towns around the lake but be warned, it isn`t cheap – even with a half-fare card. Local buses are quicker and much cheaper. You can go up Mount Rigi (behind Weggis) by cable car from Weggis or take the bus to nearby Vitznau and go to the summit by train. We also walked along the lower slopes to Greppen, a...
Read moreI have stayed in dozens of Swiss hotels for over 60 years and found the Alexander pleasant but somewhat lacking. The Hasler family were charming. ||After a long journey, it was disappointing to find all 4 adults complain about a bad first night’s sleep and something as simple as the pillows being to blame. Despite the hotel having a pillow menu with options such as pine shavings, horse hair, sheep hair, millet seed and bees wax but nothing as mundane as foam, we decided to go and purchase 4 pillows at the Coop in Luzern! This did not make a great first impression and nor did the attitude of the receptionist with whom we discussed the issue who said it was up to us. As we couldn’t take the pillows home at the end, we gifted them in pristine condition to the hotel for the benefit of future guests - so please ask!||This hotel is in a fabulous location overlooking the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne). The rooms are a little tired. The staff are mostly very pleasant and helpful but sadly not terribly efficient. Self service breakfast is an extensive buffet with little to criticise except that dishes of fruit and scrambled egg were not replenished quickly. The 3 course evening meal was tedious in terms of awaiting service especially as we had a 4 year old in our party. We also found some strange food combinations and actually preferred the food at the sister hotel, the Gerbi. Even ordering A La Carte we found restrictive over the 10 day stay. The hotel offered a meat fondu and when we asked for that one evening we were told it couldn’t be done as our table was not near to an electric socket. ||The hotel charged for tap water (we also bought soft drinks, wine and spirits) which we found strange. Yet a tea and coffee facility was free on each floor - with free water!||There were sometimes noisy building works taking place at the hotel commencing at 7am. ||The hotel pools and spa facilities were excellent. ||On days when the hotel had day conferences taking place it was very difficult to find a parking place! Spaces were reserved with plastic cones for delegates and I was asked to park further away below the hotel in a...
Read moreI had one night at this property, between Hertenstein and Weggis in a beautiful location overlooking the lake. While the property is not lake-front, it is very close to the lake, and has a bit of an elevated hill-side location, making the lake vista even more beautiful. There is a small road separating the hotel and the lake, but luckily there's very little traffic and noise from the road.||I had booked an 'Arven' room with a balcony and view of the lake. Indeed, the view was pretty spectacular, and really allowed you to take in the stunning nature of the area.||I was able to check in pretty early in the day, which was much appreciated, and I was offered a free drink (I chose Prosecco) as a welcome. I also got a free snack in the room as a welcome, and there's a mini bar as well, albeit a bit pricey.||The bathroom was also nice and pretty spacious.||The hotel features a very nice outdoor and indoor pool, and there's a spa area where you can book massages and such. There's also saunas available and various other spa facilities. ||It was slightly cold during my visit, so the heated pool was much appreciated and it was lovely to enjoy the stellar view of the lake from the pool.||I had breakfast, lunch and dinner on site (mostly because there's not many dining options within walking distance) but all was great, and service from staff was perfect. ||After dinner, I got some incredible pictures of the view, and also realized that the hotel has an area on the other side of the road, right by the lake, with chairs and a nice place to enjoy the view, literally right by the lake. ||I believe you can also use the restaurant and facilities at their sister property next door, Gerbi.||The area itself is very quiet and uneventful. There is an indoor pool at Lido across the street, and the small city of Weggis (where you can also take the boat to Luzern) is maybe a 10 minute walk from the hotel. ||Overall, an amazing hotel with great service from the staff. It shows that it's a family-run property and that they want to make every guest have a...
