A little disappointed to be honest but I think the three rating is fair. We arrived late and immediately had to pay the tax which was USD32 (4 nights x USD4 x 2 people). This was after the mandatory travel insurance to visit Zanzibar in the first place and the visas submitted for Tanzania. Whilst these factors are outside of the hotel's control, I am making sure other travellers are aware that a trip to Tanzania where a visa is required will cost a minimum of USD50 and then Zanzibar USD44 for mandatory insurance (which probably won't be as good as your own cover anyway) and then 4USD per night per person again. In effect, a short extension to our safari cost an extra USD120 on top of our hotel costs for my wife and I. The other reason for mentioning is this was the up-front payment as we arrived late after a long day of travel and surely could have been done the following day. ||We enjoyed breakfast and a big thanks to a petite young lady I think was called Julie-Rose. She was by far the most helpful member of staff. I do think some staff could do with some direction though as they often congregated together with phones out which over the next few days ended up with me going direct to the chef for my egg choice as there was nobody around. We also went later one morning to find the fruit all gone and none of the staff seemed to notice. ||My wife also wanted to use the spa and there was a misunderstanding on the initial price so I went to enquire. The advertised spa is not on-site and is at the sister hotel and advised 7 mins away. My wife was told it was USD5 to get there and I was then told after clarification it was actually 5USD EACH WAY. We messaged the spa direct on WhatsApp and the respondent gave a different view but my wife just decided she wasn't going to go at all after the palaver. As a result they lost business.||I then asked for a copy of the trips and prices that the hotel runs and was talked though them in reception but could not be given a copy or borrow the sheet. I said I just wanted to take to the room for 5 mins to show my wife but this was not an option. I advised I had an electronic one in my emails anyway from a month or two back after contacting the hotel and I would dig out when on a secure network. In the end, we went with another company so they lost business again and that was without knowing if it was any better/cheaper. ||So on the point of network, and after being in the heart of the Serengeti a few days earlier where I didn't expect any Wi-Fi at all let alone secure, I was a little disappointed that this hotel's offering is not secure. Especially since the office connections are. ||On reading the information available on a laminated sheet in the room, we then found out it was an extra 5% to pay by card. ||Losing business continued over the next few days as we decided to eat out and it wasn't because the food looked inferior; I think we'd just reached a saturation point.||On our final evening, I tried to settle our bill but was told to come back later. No reason was given but I suspect as the manager wasn't there. ||The place itself is lovely, the cleaning staff - room and pool - seemed to work really hard and we did have a leak of clean water from our toilet which they fixed very quickly.||Overall, I would say restaurant and bar staff need leadership and reception needs some delegation...
Read moreHello,
My friend and I decided to book our last 4 nights in Tanzania at the fun beach resort. It was by far our most expensive nights during our trip, but we wanted to make the most of it before coming back to rainy France. The premises are lovely, 2 huge swimming pools (one which looks like 2 it's so big), the staff is really friendly, breakfast is delicious. Our little hut was comfortable (careful open bathroom) and had a hamac which is nice for when it rains. They also have free bikes available which we used to go to paje during our first day there.
We were unfortunately a little off-put upon our arrival when reception asked us for our credit card to copy the numbers (including the ones on the back of the credit card) to ensure we wouldn't leave without paying (we had already paid 400€ on booking for our nights). We refused for safety reasons and it got tricky...we ended up finding a solution but it was long and stressful. "Good" start!
We then had an incident (still on our very first day) which spoiled our enthusiasm in spending more money in this lovely looking place. We put our cash in our room's safe as we arrived, and realised the next morning 50€ + $50 had vanished as we counted it again before going to Paje. We realise it sounds impossible, however the facts are we are missing money, so we went to reception. The lady we explained this to didn't look that surprised (which made us think this has probably happened before)! Then we were asked to talk to a lady manager + the reception manager. They listened to us and took our complaint to the hotel owner. The hotel owner decided it wasn't his problem (that the safes in his hotel aren't safe...! And what's in the safe is not their responsability according to what was explained to us). I can understand, as I would myself also be septical if I were him, but we think he could have suggested we have a beer or something to welcome us despite the issues we encountered since our arrival. But nothing! We then read all the comments on bookings for this hotel and realised the customer service is most unpleasant. We are expecting a response that says "the hotel is right, you are wrong" to this comment as This is what they seem to do, but we feel it is important you should be warned the safe IS NOT SAFE in this hotel, and this really can spoil your holiday, so be careful (especially that the windows are left open after the morning cleaning and remain open all day if you're gone on an excursion and come back late in the afternoon to close them!)
Also, we recommend you don't use their services for excursions, they are waaaaay more expensive than next door! (Google has an excursion to Chumbe at $90/pers, the hotel has it for $160!).
Other than that, we think you could spend a nice time in this hotel (30 min walk to Jambiani/ 50 min to Paje). Otherwise the Mwezi Boutique Resort where we spent our last day is also very nice with friendly staff, great massage and a pool which is lit...
