National Hotel — Hotel in Tunis

I stayed in this hotel for two nights during my flights to and from Tunis. The first time experience was very pleasant, especially checking in with Mohamed. The second time would have been equally enjoyable if it wasn't for the check out. The hotel was paid in advance through the hotel website, also confirmed at check in (I showed all the payment receipts). At check out, at 5 in the morning and with the taxi driver waiting outside, I was accused of not having paid, and even by showing the same receipts and providing the booking number I was not believed. I provided all the requested information, but I was always asked for new information (what room number did you stay in last week? really?). Luckily my Tunisian fiancée was waiting for me in the taxi, I asked her to come in and in less than a minute the situation was magically resolved. I left the hotel without even receiving an apology. Six serious issues:||1) hotel manager agreed to give a discount for 7 days, later when payment happened he changed his mind.||2) safe box in the lobby is not safe.. old and any key can open it, they were informed of this but they cracked jokes about it.||3) noisy hotel and very old...||4) bad management attitude.. all of them except a single young man. the rest are really not polite and almost their role is to thief you.||5) useless breakfast/ very poor content and if you ask for good meal they charge you addition.||6) bad wifi connection & if you talk to them to improve they will start cracking jokes and ask you to give them tips||||Result: very bad decision to select this hotel over the other nice hotels in the bouragiba street. a difference of 10-20USD but at the end you will pay it from your health. Being generous when I give it 3 stars - thanks to its location. Having said that, I would like to emphasize its not the safest location however very convenient; very close to the business district (5 minute walk), the best part is its close to the zoo…amazing place to relax, taxis are at your door step, grocery right next to the hotel.. I paid 40 USD per night..Its a no frill hotel good not very clean though. Overall for a solo business traveler with budget constraints...
