we chose to stay in this hotel for 2 nights pre and 1 night post a safari and Gorilla tracking in Bwindi. Our late arrival to Kampala but a swift pick up by our travel company and we arrived at JBK. On arrival we had to wake the receptionist, we checked in eventually and were told we had to pay for our accommodation, this was not the case as we had booked as a package trip but nice try! Interestingly the charge they tried to make for us was considerably more than the travel company had paid. We finally got to our room and whilst was very tired, it was clean enough I suppose other than the bugs in the bathroom but this is Africa. The fan didn't work on the wall but eventually a floor mounted fan was delivered, the AC didn't work and the bathroom shower showered everything other than where it was supposed to although it was nice and hot. We tried to get something to eat or drink on arrival at 11pm but was told this was impossible. however kindly the laundry boy went of to find us something at what turned to be quite an excessive cost but food all the same. Never mind, all would be better in the morning! Well, we did hope. Checking with reception re the local sights and were told where we could visit in great detail but then told it wasn't safe as 2 females travelling alone. nice, thanks for that! We hired a driver and took our day and all the major sights in Kampala and had a great day. We were told before we arrived that we would be told our cash etc would be safe left in the hotel but this is not the case and it was recommended we take everything with us when we leave the hotel. Great advice as it seems the sofa area in reception seems to be a sleeping place for anyone and everyone! The second night wasn't much better but we found the funny side when requested more loo roll (the shower had soaked ours!) we were told no and we had to wait to use the toilet to the next morning, hmmm interesting! However replenishments did arrive after much huffing and puffing! The good side of the review was the free wifi which enabled us to source another hotel to stay at following our safari - always a highlight to every story! Seriously, would give...
Read moreI did a review of Aponye Hotel where a an air-conditioned double goes for $30 USD per night. For the extra $20 USD, the JBK hotel on Luwum Street across from the ABC Capital Bank and Barclays Bank is well worth it. Why? For the extra $20 USD you get a free breakfast (at Jacquie's restaurant on the 3rd floor) that includes fruit, instant coffee, Spanish omelet, sausage, beef filled somosa, toast and jam. You also get clean rooms without dust and without mosquitos and the air-conditioning actually works and so does the hot water and there is free wireless but I didn't check to see if it worked At Aponye, there was no hot water, no free breakfast, dust and mosquitoes in the rooms. But, as usual, check the room for the hot water, air conditioner to see if it works. It can vary from room to room. The JBK website claims a double for $40 USD per night but we paid $50 USD. Check out their website for more. http://www.jbkhotel.co.ug You can make a reservation online but again I didn't try it so not sure it works. In short, I would highly recommend this hotel over Aponye, especially if you can get a double for $40 USD instead of $50 USD, only $10 USD more...
Read moreIf you a good and safe hotel in the center of Kampala and if you prefer spending your money for other things than sleeping JBK Hotel is a good choice.||The rooms are quite big, bathrooms really nice with all time hot water (do not forget to switch heater on!), internet is available, AC too and receptionist are all very nice and helpfull||.||Prices are 50% for a single/double and breakfast is included. ||That is more than reasonable esp. if you compare alternatives in Kampala.||Do not expect to much for breakfast or even to eat at night: the attached Jacquis Restaurant one floor down from the hotel premises is a unique experience to see how completly demotivated waitresses work in a service industry. a real challenge to see one of them smile - Try your luck, I failed!||But the other advantages make JBK a good choice to stay!||was there three times and will for sure come back next time I...
