Last Sunday I visited the Quorn Country House Hotel for lunch with my partner and her mother. The last time that we visited was pre-covid and we had a very lovely Sunday lunch and so we wanted to re-visit as it was my birthday recently. However, our experience on this occasion was very different and I thought I would record my comments accordingly.
Firstly it seemed that the tables in the dining room had not been set up correctly, with cutlery in the wrong place, and no table seemed to have any condiments on them (maybe a covid procedure?). The tables themselves were not great as I kept hitting my knee on one of the locking bars of these folding tables and the chairs also felt very uncomfortable, particularly on the back.
When we ordered our meals the only starter that I may have been interested in was the soup but on being told that it was cauliflower cheese soup, whatever that may be, we opted to pass on the starters. We all ordered the roast beef and we were asked what we wanted for dessert at the same time. When eventually the mains arrived the beef and the roast potatoes were fine but the remainder was very poor in our opinion. The 'Yorkshire Puddings' were flat round discs of cooked batter and bore no resemblance to a Yorkshire pudding that I have ever seen. Certainly any resident of Yorkshire would have been mortified if presented with this! The selection of vegetables that we had, namely broccoli, cauliflower and french beans seemed to be barely cooked. We had great difficulty in cutting through them with the cutlery that we had and consequently about half of these were left uneaten. When the waiter came to clear the plates he asked if the meals were ok and I said that they were poor. He made no response as to why we thought they were poor and I felt it pointless to take this up with him as he seemed quite young, nervous and inexperienced. This was borne out when he returned a few minutes later to ask what we would like for dessert only to be told that we had already ordered these with the main meals a short while earlier!
For dessert two of us opted for the Eton Mess, and it certainly lived up to the 'mess' part of its name. It consisted mainly of a soup bowl of broken pieces of meringue with a small blob of cream in the centre along with about half a dozen pieces of strawberry and blackberry. Again, this is nothing like an Eton Mess that I have ever had previously. Also, when the desserts were brought to the table we had no cutlery to eat them with and we had to ask for it, as did others who were dining there last Sunday.
All in all this whole experience was a big disappointment and was probably the worst Sunday lunch that I have ever had to pay for. I did e-mail these comments to the hotel suggesting that they improve their service and quality as they are are likely to drive more custom away than they will attract but I have received no response, which says it all frankly. We won't be rushing back...
Read moreDirty hotel, appalling staff, very low level of service. This was my wedding day, the reception room was disgusting, my husband and daughter had to sweep the left over food up from the previous days wedding. When asked the staff were not responsive and didn't seem to care. My wedding planner promised me a stress free day but she wasn't available, not even by phone. The bedrooms are dated, dirty and smelly. My wedding music was supplied on a memory stick which wasn't tested until 30 minutes before the ceremony started and it didn't work, my husband had to stand with the assistant manager downloading the music to his phone. The reception bar was disorganised, we put money behind the bar which the bar staff were not aware of so my guests were paying for drinks, guests were charged different amounts for the same rounds of drinks. We had asked that each guest receive 2 tickets for 2 free drinks each as they entered the reception room but as the wedding planner hadn't passed on this information this didn't happen. When this was finally sorted out staff were putting tickets on empty seat places so some of my guests were having upwards of 6 free drinks and some were getting none, myself included. The bar staff did not keep a tally of the free drinks so we are not aware of how many tickets were issued and how much of the money we put behind the bar was used. Breakfast the next morning was diabolical, frozen bread, no buffet items and when they did bring some items out there was only enough for 2 or 3 guests at a time, the floors in the breakfast area were filthy, the tables were not being cleared the carpets in the other dining area looked like they hadn't been vacuumed since lockdown. I contacted the hotel to speak to the wedding planner who has conveniently been moved to another hotel, I spoke to the general manager Anthony who covers Quorn Country & Risley Hall hotels, he promised me to look into my complaints and call me that weekend but I haven't heard from him and can't get him on the phone and he is ignoring my emails. I wouldn't stay at this hotel or any in this group if they offered it to me free. Disgusting hotel and very shoddy staff. The hotel definitely needs refurbishing and the...
Read moreUnfortunately, the experience did not meet our expectations, and I feel it’s important to share the details with you.
From the start, we found issues with the room’s cleanliness. The shower head was dirty, the pillows were old, flat and caused discomfort in the night, and the carpet and walls were worn and scuffed. On our second day, our room wasn’t serviced at all, and we noticed rust, grime, and black mold in the bathroom, which was very concerning. We were also told that our room was in a building with a broken door that was being repaired the day after we arrived but sadly never was. The elevator was also not working making it more inconvenient to haul suitcases up the stairs which we had to discover ourselves. An overall great feeling after booking an executive room.
Our experience at breakfast was equally disappointing. Although we arrived at 9:50 AM for the continental breakfast (which was advertised until 10:00 AM), a staff member named Jade greeted us abruptly and made us check the time, implying we were late. When we explained we only wanted a continental breakfast, she told us to just sit anywhere in a very dismissive manner. Half the tables were dirty, there were no plates available, and we ended up having to eat toast on a napkin. The coffee was terrible, and there was no juice left. It really felt like we were an inconvenience for arriving close to the end of service, even though we were still within the advertised time. Jade also checked us out with no courtesy, not even a simple goodbye and didn’t ask how our stay was. It was very much like “yep that’s paid” with a ‘you can go now’ attitude.
We chose your hotel because it’s near my parents’ home, and we hoped to make it our regular accommodation for family visits. However, after this experience, we will not be returning or recommending it to others.
The experience did not reflect the quality we expected for...
