Really sad to report just how much this hotel has gone downhill. The rooms are desperately in need of updating now. Rooms are still large and spacious, however.
The hotel website states that fridges are provided but our room had none. I was told that ice machines could be located at the end of each floor. I tried three on different floors, but none worked. I gave up and went without.
We wandered down to the swimming pool and spa facilities to look around. My mother became upset as the gentleman was busy telling another member of staff about our phone call (which had apparently been answered in the gym) regarding the lack of a fridge. He did not sound empathetic in his description of our call, and nor did the facial expression of the other member of staff, who appeared exasperated. I spoke up at that point, that it had been myself that had called and they both seemed slightly abashed. I told them not to worry about it and left, as clearly no one cared.
The pool was lovely and appeared very large on first glance although this is deceiving. The sides of the pool are incredibly shallow and the centre is quite deep. My mum banged her knee on the side of the pool, as the notices to inform you of the depth were somewhere in the centre of the pool, in very small writing. She complained of pain in her knee the rest of the stay. The whirlpool is just large enough to possibly accommodate two people and is conjoined to the pool. It is a token gesture at best.
Later that evening we attended the hotel restaurant for dinner. This was perhaps the worst aspect of our stay, which was very sad as it has always been one of the highlights for me previously. I requested a Margarita and was told that the Barman could not make one to which I laughingly offered to show him how. Instead, we both chose cocktails from the menu. Sadly, they were very much more spritz than alcohol. I did not order anything further from the bar as a result.
We then attempted to order food. I was persuaded to go for fish and chips as my mum had ordered. While she was lucky and seemed to get a reasonable portion of fish, mine was laughably devoid of fish for the most part. On top of this, both our starter and main course appeared at the same time with two different waiters. I refused the mains, which were taken back and arrived about 15 mins after our starters but were scalding hot.
The single waitress we were assisted by was lovely and even took the blame for the food arrival problems. She single-handedly waited on us, as well as a bus load of pensioners who had arrived in the hotel at the same time as us. I felt so sorry for her. We then retired back to our room until breakfast the next day which was another massive farce.
I requested (as I have in the past) some Belgium waffles as normally they are lovely here and the chef was always so thoughtful and creative with them. I also requested a couple of bowls of porridge as I don’t really eat a cooked breakfast in the morning.
The porridge was hard and made with water, as if it had been tipped out of an instant carton, and I found myself spitting bits of husk out of it. I wasn’t happy with it at all. It was nowhere near the normal standard of porridge at a hotel breakfast. The waffles were cold and came with no syrup. I requested some Maple and was told they didn’t have maple syrup. Eventually, they managed to find some and came back with a tablespoon in a ramakin. The waffles were the kind that Costco sells, with little sugar crystals in them. They tasted sickly and processed. I literally couldn’t eat them.
In terms of the service, the staff seemed overworked and hurried but they were all lovely in the restaurant. Clearly the hotel is seriously lacking in funds and has cut many corners as a result. It really does show. I will not be returning here again unless something major changes.
I felt robbed by the amount of money I handed out as I paid my bill. I have stayed in 2-star establishments that did better than this hotel, on...
Read moreToo Long Didn’t Read / TLDR: |An excellently located hotel if the west side of Newcastle is where you need to be. Rooms are spotless, and staff are excellent.||The hotel is to the west of the MetroCentre on the A1M and about an easy 15m walk from the train station - which is on the Newcastle to Carlisle / Hexham line. Nearby there is of course the Metro Centre, a McDonalds, Pizza Hut, IKEA, an ASDA, and the on-site restaurant ‘Cast Iron Grill’||The windows in this room open, and are triple glazed so once they are shut, there is no outside noise from the road or car park etc.||The A/C functioned well, but only if you remember to switch it to the desired setting - it was off when we came in and I didn’t spot it was off, so we came back to a quite warm room given it was an unusually sunny day out! I don’t think it is externally ventilated, but then you have an opening window for that.||In the room there is a decently sized under counter fridge, a Dualit Nespresso machine and the usual teas and coffees. ||Phone signal 3 bars on EE good data, 2 bars on Vodafone similarly good data and 3 bars on o2 with speedy data. ||Platinum benefits were 1000 points or $10 per night, and free breakfast - which you can’t say fairer than that!||The Good;|The room we were given was a premium room, and it was huge. As was the bathroom which featured a full size bath! Both the room and the bathroom were spotlessly clean - and we had a nice welcome gift of two cans of local beer by a nearby independent brewery, but no water - but perhaps this was accidental as I did see a stack of water cans waiting collection elsewhere in the hotel the next day.||The bed and pillows were also very comfortable, and even though I was only here one night, I got a good nights’ sleep. ||The furniture is a bit old fashioned but high quality, reminding me of a classic Marriott (which I suspect it was pre-Delta re-brand). Breakfast was similarly excellent, with a wide range of hot and cold breakfast foods, a toaster that had ‘this is the best settings - please don’t alter them’ sign which genuinely did make toast to the best setting, and a range of additional chef cooked items to ask for like omelettes and black pudding. ||All the staff we engaged with were excellent.| The Not So Good:|Not enough plug sockets in the room for me - as there were no easily accessible plugs at the bedside for phone charing (there was a 5V standard USB port, but I only had USB-C + UK Plugs with me! There is a lone socket with USB-C but alas, it wasn’t functioning). But honestly, if this is the only thing in ‘Not so good’ then consider me impressed!||The Weird:|The lifts are incredibly slow, and only one seemed to be operational during our stay. If you are ambulatory, you can quite easily beat the lift down (and we did). ||In Summary: |Great location, great rooms, great staff. I will return...
Read moreMyself and my 9 year old daughter stayed for 1 night, we are both Autistic so I requested a quiet room but we were put in a room with an extractor fan on the external wall which I didn't realise until later as after check in we went swimming and for food. The hotel offered to change our room but by this time my daughter had settled so a sudden change would of been too overwhelming for her. ||This was room 103, there was no fridge despite the room information stating there was, upon asking I was told my type of room (Deluxe) was not guaranteed a fridge but it didn't state that in the description when I booked and was relying on a fridge to keep milk and fruit chilled for my daughter, again the hotel offered to see if they could find a spare one but I had just bought a cooler bag from the local Asda instead, I also bought ear plugs but the vibrating noise of the fan on the external wall kept me awake all night so if those type of noises bother you definitely avoid this room. There was also no complimentary water in the room which again was in the description so I feel like they should remove these things from the room description info if they aren't being provided anymore. ||Other than that the room was lovely but we had to pay over double the price for the night we needed to stay in comparison to all the other nights that month, I'm guessing because there was a concert on at the Arena as I can't think why else the other nights were around £60 at time of booking but we paid £151 but we weren't able to be flexible on dates unfortunately. ||We used the swimming pool, which is small but more than sufficient for us, there was swim classes on but that only took a small part of the pool. The pool was nice and warm and we enjoyed our swim, the loungers around the pool are all ripped though which I felt was something the hotel would of fixed as it doesn't give a good impression but it didn't affect us it just looks a bit shabby when the rest of the area was lovely. ||The location is great with it being near the metrocentre there are plenty of shops, restaurants and public transport options. Apart from the extractor fan noise and some noisy guests shouting and arguing, which obviously the hotel can't help, it's in a quiet area. We would stay again but ask for a higher floor and be more specific about requesting a room away from extractor fan type noises rather than just asking for...
