I wish I had discovered this place earlier, my daughter studied at Durham Uni and I have been visiting 2-4 times a year for 3 years and this would have been a great place to come back to time after time! ||1) it’s not an impersonal chain hotel obviously and it’s not one of the overpriced ‘bijou’ establishments in town where disincentivised staff have little interest in your stay….. and students pound the corridors and shout all night (all of which I have experienced many times).||2) It IS an owner occupied establishment with deliciously warm owners, all of the basics like scrupulously clean rooms plus a pub of friendly locals and ‘characters’ and an individually cooked English breakfast, which is the only way to experience a traditional ‘full English’.||3) Tourists could learn a lot about life in the North of England from talking to James and Sarah two charismatic, witty and generous hosts, whilst enjoying the rich history of Durham, juxtaposed against the rather uniquely posh student cohort! ||4) Lots of nearby parking and a quick and cheap uber ride into town makes it as convenient as anywhere. ||5) If you like a place where ‘everybody knows your name’ to quote Cheers - then...

The rooms are clean, everything works as it should and the bed was comfortable. But its the ambience of the place where it scores highly. Outside it looks like a pub, but inside its such a great place to be. I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 day stay and on occasion even passed on the pleasures of Durham to spend more time in the hotel. I have to say that Sarah's breakfasts are outstanding and I look forward to the day when they start doing evening meals. I certainly intend to go back. Thank you once again...
Read moreGreat value for money and rooms really good for the price and had everything we needed. Particularly liked large bedside table space and conveniently place bedside plug sockets and plenty of coat hooks in room and en suite. Quite a large telly too. Room and ensuite shower werent huge but more than adequate for our stay. Full english was decent too, again great value given the price. Location worked for us and parking was easy albeit not a dedicated car park for the pub. Advertised check-in was a bit later than most places we've stayed (4pm) but they didnt mind when we turned up a little early. Sunday breakfast time of 7-8am was a bit brutal too...
