tl:dr - I recommend Hill Farm Camping without reservation. For more detail, keep reading 👇🏻
Background: while walking the Ridgeway in March 2023, I planned to stay here for a night. The weather turned seriously bad and by the time I arrived the whole site was under inches of snow and high winds.
BOTHY CABIN REVIEW: Luckily, Laura offered me the chance to stay in their brand new “bothy cabin” - and I jumped at the chance.
What you need from a bothy is weather protection; what you want from it is warmth and some comfort. The bothy cabin at Hill Farm is all this and more. As soon as you are inside all the wind and rain outside is forgotten. There is a quickly warming fire, a couch facing it, and an inviting double bed. As the wind howls outside, you can relax and enjoy the feeling of warming your toes - which, after a few days of cold weather camping you really appreciate. TIP: if you pass through Wendover on the way to the campsite, pick up a bottle of wine to enjoy by the fire
The decor is tasteful and rustic, and evocative of the outdoors. There’s a small fridge and some other cooking facilities, and the porch area would be a great place to sit out on in good weather.
General campsite review:
✅ booking and contact was very easy, response time was quick, and arrangements were flexible, by email, phone and in person
✅ facilities are clean and everything worked well. Showers (on 5minute token system) worked well and the kitchen for communal use was well stocked with coffee, tea, and had space to sit and relax
✅ tent and caravan paddocks are separate and spacious
✅ you can access the campsite directly from footpaths in Wendover woods, thus avoiding the road if you are walking the ridgeway
✅ Ridgeway Walkers enjoy a discount on stays and also access to complimentary tea and coffee
✅ Laura is very responsive, considerate, and guest-oriented; I changed my date of arrival at short notice and arrived late during a snow storm, yet Laura was nothing but welcoming and considerate
The Hill Farm team really go out of their way to take care of you. I’m confident that if you stay there, you will very much enjoy your time there. Thanks once again to Laura and the Hill Farm team for making my stay so...
Read moreWe’ve just had a wonderful overnight stay at the Hill Farm campsite. I went with four other girlfriends and our kids and it couldn’t have been more perfect! Between us, we stayed in three bell tents and they were all spacious and very comfortable. Laura has thought of absolutely everything! She even provides a battery charging power pack for your phone! Each bell tent has a picnic bench outside, camping chairs, a barbecue and a fire pit and Laura had provided us with coal, firewood matches, absolutely everything we could possibly need! Inside the tent there was a barbecue set with skewers and barbecue utensils. Laura had even left marshmallows and chocolate digestives for us to make s’mores with! Two minutes from the tent there were three clean toilets and sinks and a shower and also a little kitchenette stocked with coffee, milk and a kettle! The campsite is situated very close to Wendover woods so we had a lovely day going to Go Ape first, then spend the night at the campsite and the following day we went back to Wendover to do the play trail which the kids loved! We were also able to park our car right next to the bell tent so loading and unloading the car couldn’t have been easier! There were also lovely touches like gorgeous fairy lights lining the outside of the tent and Laura had even thought to provide eye masks and ear plugs! In summary, Laura couldn’t have made the whole glamping experience any better for us! She took away the whole hassle factor and both us and the kids had the best time! We were only there for a night but the kids came away saying it was one of their favourite holidays ever! I highly recommend Hill Farm campsite and would go back in...
Read moreSmall but perfectly formed campsite with friendly and helpful owner!
We stayed in a 6-person bell tent which was spotless and kitted out with everything you could possibly need; beds, lamps, cutlery, plates, pans, torches, sleep masks, earplugs! We were even given marshmallows and biscuits for making snores on the fire! You are supplied with all the necessary items for starting a log fire and BBQ which takes the hassle out of having to remember and transport lots of items. The whole set up was great for staying with young children as you can relax knowing you've got everything you need (although you'd need to bring sufficient food supplies as I'm not sure there's any shops in walking distance but I could be wrong).
The campsite is small and remote which was lovely. We didn't have to queue for the bathroom at any point. You are given tokens for the shower, each token gives 5 minutes of water which is more than enough, and I think this is great as it saves water. An extra bonus is that there is a small room on site with a kettle so you can make yourself a cuppa without needing a stove!
Laura was so friendly in all communication and came to check we were ok during our stay, she was very helpful and you can see she takes so much pride in her work ensuring everyone is comfortable and that a high level of cleanliness is maintained. I highly recommend and will definitely be back! Thank...
