A friend and I wanted to catch up and decided to book a one night stay at Middlethorpe. We booked rooms in the main building and despite our stay being a lot shorter than we would have wished, we enjoyed it thoroughly.||This is a beautiful historic house a mere 10-15 minutes from York station (about £8-10 by Uber or taxi), but which feels like miles (or arguably years) away. The gardens and estate are magnificent, and I felt like I was relaxing the moment I arrived. ||The rooms decor is very individualised and befits the place,, and the rooms themselves are very comfortable, with well appointed bathroom, espresso coffee machine, slippers, bathrobes, quality toiletries, and water (since there were two bottles, I mistakenly thought one was supposed to be sparkling but when I asked about it, the hotel manager most kindly offered to replace one by sparkling and it is small gestures like that which make a stay special. The only thing I'd note is that with this unusually summery British weather, the rooms do get quite warm even at night, but after toying with the idea of asking reception whether they had a fan I could borrow (they may have) I found that simply sleeping with the windows open was fine as well as a pleasant little weather luxury!||Service is excellent, responsive, and personable. My pre-arrival emails were answered promptly, and the hotel was kindly able to arrange an early check in which was much appreciated since I needed to leave early the next morning (note that we were there on a relatively low occupancy midweek day and I suspect they would not have been able to offer the same, even with the best will in the world, at the weekend or during holidays when I expect them to be very full). Mark who showed us around was very nice as was everyone we dealt with during our short stay and it is clear that the staff take genuine pride in being part of such a special place.||There are several common rooms on the ground floor (drawing room, library, etc) but to be honest, with the wonderful weather, we mostly enjoyed the terrace, which was a wonderful place to have lunch, a drink, or simply read a book. The gardens and grounds are lovely. At this time of year, the rose garden is spectacular (and smells wonderful) and I was very happy to see all the things Middlethorpe is growing and I believe using in the kitchen (apples, pears, raspberries, rhubarb, cauliflower, etc)||Talking of food, it is a highlight too. The dinner menu is on the expensive side (£66 for two courses, 85 for three, or 105 for the tasting menu which is comparatively the best value but we were not hungry enough for it after a beautiful lunch!) but the quality of the food was commensurate. I was impressed by the bar food. All of it was delicious. I notably loved my excellent fish and chips and the homemade ice-cream we shared (with particular fondness for the rum-raisin one). ||Breakfast starts at 7.30, but as I needed to leave about 20 minutes later, I was very kindly allowed to go down a few minutes earlier to place my order for a hot dish so that it could be ready shortly after 7.30. Said order was haddock, and I have to say that this alone would make me feel like returning. It was served with a bit of wilted spinach, two nicely poached eggs, and some mustard cream and it gave me the courage i needed to ride the train back to work.||The spa is enjoyable with a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, and jacuzzi as well as a gym. It was quite busy when we went (not hotel residents but I suspect local members who very understandably enjoying the facilities) but it did not prevent us from enjoying a quick swim.||In short, I loved Middlethorpe. It was what I had imagined when I booked it and I can't wait to return though I hope next time we'll manage a...
Read moreLast minute booking to end a weekend away.||First impressions the building and surrounds look beautiful. On entry we were impressed with the stunning central staircase, and the menagerie of quaint rooms branching off. |We stayed in an upper floor room in the main building over looking the formal gardens and stunning park. Safe, trouser press etc located to the left on entry. Whilst the room was large in enough in size, the bed not so (double), it was decorated in accordance with the era, the furnishings were in our view of a lower value “ antique,” not antique at all in some cases and didn’t fit the theme. Obviously a listed building with limitations, we found the only electrical sockets (modern appliances) were for the TV. We were very shocked to in fact see the option for charging phones, tablets etc being a multi plug extension placed on the bedside table. |Not a problem for us but there are no quilts provided instead blankets, the bed and pillows were sufficient and we had a comfortable nights sleep.nir the |We found the tea/coffee facilities not for us, cramped and “long life milk” no thank you. |The bathroom whilst quite small was sufficient. The only criticism we have would be the toilet/bath mat, not hygienic and not in keeping with the room. We found the cheap plastic toilet brush/holder to be really tacky and not representing the era of the room nor the room rate of £235pn. A radiator placement over the bath we found very odd again not in keeping. |The “lift” was our favourite, we found it to be a form of amusement, quaint and claustrophobic. |The main drawing room we found very quiet and more like a nursing home type sitting room, in fact, an older lady had fallen fast asleep in a corner and was abruptly woken by her husband when he noticed. Most of the furnishings were quite good (curtains etc) some were obviously not real (the many portraits and paintings, pieces of furniture, in some cases it made the overall effect look quite cheap. |Breakfast was taken in two rooms overlooking the grounds. The service was good, the continental buffet was a little lacking in choice. The cooked Yorkshire breakfast was ok but quite small, certainly not enough if you were hungry. |The spa located opposite the main building was a surprise. The pool very nice, situated in 2converted buildings along with jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. |We had a walk around the beautiful gardens and park and by far these were the highlight of our visit. Maybe Middlethoroe Hall is not our cup of tea but the services received were...
Read moreMiddlethorpe Hall is a truly stunning place with the most amazing, dedicated and hardworking team! We chose to have our wedding at Middlethorpe in June and I would like to thank all the team for making it such a perfect day. It was down to their commitment to excellent service, attention to detail and thoughtfulness that we had such an amazing day. I cannot thank you all enough!
From initially seeing Middlthorpe Hall we knew we wanted to get married there, both the grounds and house are beautiful with impeccable upkeep. After meeting Julia, the Wedding Coordinator, we knew our wedding day was in safe hands with her and the Middlethorpe Team. She ensured our day ran smoothly and had thought of details for the wedding that even we had not. Our day would not have been as wonderful as it was without her help and input. She was professional, always available and quick to respond.
We arrived at Middlethorpe Hall the night before the wedding, all the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. From arrival we were made to feel very special and all our needs (and more) were catered for. All the rooms were pretty and spotless, we stayed in the Duke of York Suite and it is without a doubt the most outstanding room I have ever stayed in. I used the Spa facilities and had my nails done, the lady who did my nails was lovely and did a wonderful job. The Spa facilities are well kept.
Whenever we needed anything, every member of staff was willing to go the extra mile for us. The staff seemed very excited about the wedding and they really made our day feel even more special. The day was completely stress free thanks to the team at Middlehthorpe. I cannot thank the Chef enough for the best meal we have ever had, the quality of the food was outstanding! Every course not only tasted delicious but was presented impeccably and the timing of bringing out the food was perfect. All the table staff who served us were helpful, friendly and very attentive whilst being subtle and not over bearing. We would like to thank them!
I would highly recommend Middlethorpe not only for weddings but also to stay in the hotel, to eat or use the Spa. The combination of the gorgeous building and grounds , excellent location near York and by far the best customer service I have ever received mean it is one of the best hotels in the country! I felt that it was excellent value for money and if in doubt about booking just look at everyone else's...
