I love this big, free open space, it's a wonderful place to walk the dog, or to exercise, picnic in summer or to just have a lazy afternoon in the sun. Has plenty of space so you can social distance, which is a necessity at the moment.
Today I actually sat parked at the side of the road with the car window open a little as I didnt have the energy to walk, my disability didnt do me favours today plus the dog was in the dog creche for the day... but there were plenty of individuals who were doing their thing here.
The only time I would not reccomend going near here is on a race day, it gets exceptionally busy on race days with coaches leading and unloading, cars going to the car parks, and 1000's people walking to the racecourse , plus theres many entrances which takes you over the race track which is dangerous with running horses around... not that the security would allow that, but the amount of people attending the races it's so busy around here it's like being in piccadilly circus... plus when racing is on, theres no car parking as there usually is, the police and council ticket and tow your vehicle so it will be an expensive visit and the streets nearby are all restricted to residents parking only, the ones that are not are usually nose to tail with cars either side... so not a good scenario. However, if your wanting a little wind in your hair, a bit of sun on your back and your just wanting to get out into open spaces in York, get yourself down to the beautiful knavesmire... just watch your feet as not every dog owner is as thoughtful as others and you may step in something nasty after one of these inconsiderate people have left a pile of dog s*... what you waiting for go...

Read moreA fantastic place to walk, do ParkRun, cycle, have a picnic, walk the dog, play sports with the kids or even watch the horse racing. There is often a mobile coffee van there as well.
The only things to watch out for are: it's a very large open space so the wind does whip through there on cold wintery days - please dress accordingly. when it has been raining heavily the path can become fairly wet (although recently the racecourse and the council have worked hard to rectify this in places). It is a racecourse. When the horse racing is on the Knavesmire is closed to all those without a ticket to watch the horseracing. You can check online when the race dates are. By all accounts going to the racing is a fun day out, though I've never...
