Six Castlegate is a distinctive, pink coloured house half way up the short hill. There is no parking, but we parked in the Bitterbeck public car park which is only about 100 yards away and a 24 hour ticket costs a very reasonable £6.20.||The house is large, impressive and very attractive and on arrival Samantha made us feel most welcome. Our room, Melbreak, was spacious, well appointed, nicely decorated and furnished, and very comfortable. The en-suite was similarly smart and featured a bath with an integrated shower that featured a rather unique triple shower head. I’ve never seen one of those before - but it certainly delivers a fabulous shower. ||Breakfast was taken in a charming dining room and it was excellent. On the first morning we had a starter of natural yoghurt with fruit coulis topped with granola followed by a Cumbrian breakfast that consisted of excellent, local ingredients which were perfectly cooked and nicely presented. On subsequent mornings we had different choices and my wife declared her smoked salmon and scrambled eggs to be top class. I also sampled the scrambled eggs and had to commend Mathew for his ability to cook scrambled eggs perfectly. These were gently folded and not overly cooked eggs, and absolutely delicious.||As far as B&B customers are concerned however, the sad news is that Samantha and Matthew are giving this part of their business up from the end of May, and are changing to complete house rental. Read moreThis is a very special place to stay. I felt immediately welcome and at home in this lovely old house, which has been decorated simply and beautifully with many lovely touches. Samantha and Mathew are warm and friendly and incredibly helpful. I was in a large room at the top of the house, with two big windows and lovely views over the rooftops to the hills beyond. The bed was huge and very comfortable and there was a good sized television and comfy chair. Breakfast was first rate, with lots of choice! Cockermouth is a nice town, with plenty of places to eat, shops, Wordsworth's house, river, and easy access to the Western and Northern Lakes, as well as the coast. As a lone traveller, the ambience of where you stay is especially important, and this really...
Read moreSamantha and Mathew really try to make your stay a lovely experience. Six Castlegate is a lovely old house which has been tactfully maintained to preserve its character. The rooms are very clean with good en-suite facilities. Although there are no car parking space, we didn't find it a problem at all, since the owners had purchased parking permits at a car park just 2 minutes walk away. Cockermouth is a lovely small town which has kept its character and since Six Castlegate is so well located, we could enjoy a walk around town without using the car. There are plenty of places to eat out, to suit all pockets. But we found it advantageous to book in advance, since these soon become fully booked. We would definitely recommend this B&B and we will certainly...
