We tried the Chameleon House 3 weeks after it first opened and both my husband and myself found it to be excellent. So much so in fact that I decided to take a couple of friends out for lunch there about 6 weeks later, this time and rather embarrassingly for me as I had recommended this place to my friends, the service was shocking... we waited for over an hour (apparently they had a new chef) before any food arrived at the table... and then only my friends meals were served as the soufflé I had ordered had apparently failed and they would have to cook me another (we had already been waiting over an hour)... I asked how much longer this would be and was told another 10 minutes so rather than waste any more time I ordered a baguette which arrived in about 4 minutes.
I must be a gluten for punishment as I decided to give them one more go with my husband for lunch as I like the 'feel' of the place, the restaurant is well laid out and seems modern, light and airy. I was so disappointed to have another bad experience... I liked the sound of the bruchetta with chickpeas and aubergine but was quite hungry so also tried ordering hand cut chips to have on the side... well you would have thought I had asked for the world from the waitresses reaction - she said sorry we have run out... 'would skinny fries be ok?' - I am afraid I rather lost the will to ever go back to this place again and asked the waitress why they cant go out and buy some potatoes and make some more! This was a Friday lunchtime... how can a restaurant run out of chips?!!! So we are sad to say that we have give the Chameleon a fair crack of the whip but we wont be going back unless it...
Read moreSo I had booked far in advance for just one night during a walking trip, forgotten or never really known the details beyond the location (ideal for Angles' way trail) and finally arrived in the dark so I didn't see the outside of the building till the morning. An entrance from a side passage also didn't give me much information as to what to expect. I started to wonder as I saw the old oak beams and I could barely believe my eyes when I turned the light on in my room (number 2, double bed). This turned out to be a fantastic, cleverly renovated space in an old building with big windows overlooking the high street (so lots of light but I only learned that in the morning!). Pretty much like a suite in a boutique hotel in a big city - plenty of room, good decor that makes the most of the old beams and fireplace (but modern bathroom 🙂), dining and seating areas, kitchen nook with toaster/kettle, etc .... for about a tenth the price! Location in town centre was ideal for me as I could easily walk out to find food (several options, can highly recommend Momiji Japanese restaurant at other end of town, say 10min walk). Host was also very friendly and helpful. So overall a great...
