First of all, this is a mostly positive review of a very cute and well intentioned spot on the Oregon Coast that could use a little bit of Love. We stayed here for one night in October in Cabin #1 during a tour of the PNW and Oregon Coast. The rates are reasonable for what you get, but we felt that there were several issues that prevented the B. Side from getting a full 5 Stars. ||The Positives:|-The whole place is adorable, situated in a small, renovated motor hotel style accommodation that probably dates back to the 50/60’s and has been renovated and updated with as many modern amenities as possible using the existing infrastructure. I had forgotten how much I love just parking directly outside my accommodation and walking straight out to my parking spot. With so many closed motels up and down the coast, I wish more places like this existed. There are seating areas with benches and BBQ grilling areas. We arrived too late to use these, but they are available.||-Quiet: The motel enforces quite hours and although it was full, it was very quiet after 9:00||-Convenient: The b. Side is located directly off US 101 about 7 minutes from the highway. It’s easy to find with GPS directions and easy to make your way out.||The Not So Positives:|-The cleanliness/maintenance of Cabin #1 was a little suspect. The motel provides a kettle and coffee maker and we wanted to use the kettle to make tea, but it looked like it hadn’t been fully cleaned out from the previous user. The fuzzy “blanket” on the bed seemed unnecessary and not really useful but also like it probably wasn’t regularly cleaned. Actually, nothing in the room or bathroom felt overly “clean”. It was fine, but just felt a little grimy.|The room comes with a microwave and a fridge both of which looked like they had seen better days. It looks like the thought was to buy some cute “vintage” looking appliances with no thought as to what would happen when things would inevitably get worn out/dinged up or chipped. There were also a couple of burnt out light bulbs in our room.||Your Mileage May Vary:|Depending on how you feel about these things, you may want to consider the following.||-Small: This is a renovated, vintage motel with vintage motel sized rooms. The floors are bare concrete and the bathroom is large but oddly laid out. We were two adults in a King Room with two bags and it was very tight.||-No Front Desk: You get a text message with a lock code to get into your room about a day before your arrival. There is no front desk and I’m not sure what would happen if you encounter a problem late at night. We arrived after 10 pm and luckily had no problems.||Very “Mom & Pop: The towels, bathroom amenities and lighting felt more like it came from someone’s home rather than a motel supply company. The bathroom decor was solid and provided cotton swabs and Q-Tips in little jars.||-WiFi Available but No Traditional TV: Everything is done via App or WiFi. The room comes with complimentary access to Roku TV, a couple of streaming services but if you want to have your normal TV routine, you may be out of luck.||Concluding:|Overall it was a fine experience. There isn’t much in the way of accommodation this far down the coast and the b. Side was fine for our needs for one night. The vintage boutique style was great but could use...

Our hosts, Nicole & David were warm, welcoming, and left their own dinner preparation to rescue us—their intrepid but foolish guests, who stayed too long after sunset and found ourselves in complete darkness, locked behind the only gate in Shore Acres State Park just before our appointed check-in time, with no cell service and a janky pay phone circa 1987.
Nicole could barely hear us, but was able to make out that we were trapped, paused her own dinner plans, drove 30 minutes, and offered to take on our luggage and ferry us back to her lovely motel. Fortunately, we were able to contact State Police who roused the Park Ranger to unlock the gates in the meantime, and in short order—we were all on our way.
We were already profoundly grateful and then we were completely delighted by the stay in room #6 “Baja in Bandon.” The property is beautifully renovated, painted in cheerful, sunny gold and sky-blue accents on the outside and thoughtfully decorated on the inside. The warm and cool color scheme was reminiscent of desert landscapes and turquoise seas replete with a large cactus painting and bone-white distressed painted furniture and shelves. The bed and linens were comfortable and tastefully matched.
The room was full of nice, boutique touches and charming decor that included a tray for keys and pocket items, branded drink coasters, a coat rack, movable seating, handmade shampoo soap, little chocolates and snack bars, a tea selection, a pour over coffee setup, a Daewoo retro-style microwave and mini-fridge stocked with sparkling and still water, and various table, bedside, overhead, and swag lamp lighting to create your own mood in the room.
The back window looks out onto a shared common area and gathering space with a charcoal grill, picnic tables, and beautiful plantings and feeders where birds and hummingbirds frequent. The area is lit up with string lights for charmed evenings. Even the outdoor separated cannabis cabin / grass hut and tobacco station are adorably decorated with painted rocks, colored bottles, sailor’s knots and netting and provisioned with tiki-style lounge chairs, ashtrays, candles, solar lights and yes—even little chocolate treats showed up here.
We enjoyed our stay so much, we returned two days later on our trip back up the coast towards home and stayed in #5 “The Nest,” a bird-themed room and yet another cozy tiny home away from home. We thought it would be amazing to book the whole place with a group of family or friends for a few day’s stay inside or out in the camping area. We will...
Read moreDisclaimer: We stayed here twice with the previous owners when it was known as the Bandon Wayside. This review was for our first experience. We have no experience with the new owners or the changes since our last visit.
We had to exit another property on short notice in the middle of our vacation, and I'm so glad we found the Bandon Wayside! This is a real gem of roadside Americana from the era of the US road trip but updated wonderfully for today's travelers.
We stayed in their Seasider room (2 queen beds), and it was nothing but charming. Everything was sparkling clean. Brand new beds, very comfortable mattresses and quality linens. The hosts have mixed vintage and modern decor in a stylish, hip way that retains the retro feel of the property without being dated. Clean bathroom with hot shower and good water pressure. We really appreciated the mini fridge, microwave, bar cart with dishes, coffee maker, black out shades, extra towels (replaced with clean ones every day of our stay), plenty of charging outlets, and handmade soaps/shampoo bars. Rock solid free WiFi, air purifier (no joke!), free parking at our door and delicious organic snacks in the room were all nice bonuses.
The Bandon Wayside hosts were also very welcoming to our pup, and even left us a pet sheet and towel to make his stay more comfy.
Need to mention that even though this spot is right on a major highway, it is quiet at night and we slept very well.
Although we don't RV (yet!) their RV park at the rear of the property is also great. Nestled under tall shady trees with clean, updated restrooms, a picnic area with garden, hammock and twinkling lights in the trees at night.
The hosts, Dave and Nicole, are obviously proud of their inn and it shows. All Dave's recommendations for places to eat and visit near Bandon were spot on. These folks are warm and friendly, professional, and so accommodating; we enjoyed meeting them and chatting about the history and renovations of their property.
We will definitely stay with them again on our next visit to the beautiful Southern Oregon coast!
Thank you, again and best wishes,...
