I didn't plan on a hotel stay, however I found myself falling asleep as I was driving. This was the first hotel that I saw when I arrived to Beatty, NV. There wasn't to many vehicles so I felt a sense of relief that it had vacancies. It was well lit up, which gave me comfort and I felt safe. It was the middle of the night and I was by myself. Im just going say, because of the man who runs this hotel and the way he took care of my needs along with the fact that my property and my life were in a safe place was enough that I was able to get the rest that I needed. The room was clean. The bed was comfortable, shower perfect with plenty of soap shampoo and makeup remover. Four sets of towels, the air-conditioning was awesome. Plenty of channels on the TV. The coffee was good and I didn't even need to ask for more. There was plenty in my room. So when I prepared to checkout I found a note on my door asking me to visit the office before I leave. I was shocked to find out that my credit card didn't go through. I immediately called my bank and due to fraud I wasn't able to pay my bill for the room. I did have some cash but not quite enough and I still needed to get gas. The guy told me it would be ok and If I needed he would let it slide. Who does that these days?? I ended up calling my son and he paid for it but, #1 the man didn't wake me up after my card failed. He left a note and trusted me to go back and see him when I could have just left. #2 He offered to give me the room for free because I had no way to pay after finding out that my account had a hold on it. ( Im sorry I don't remember his name but he is the owner) Sir, Thank you so very much for the trust you gave to me, (a complete stanger) and for your kind heart. It speaks volumes of your character! 10 stars if I...
Read moreThe El Portal Motel in Beatty is a great place to stay when visiting nearby Death Valley National Park, the eastern entrance only being about 10 miles away. Quite a few travelers appear to make this their base either going to or coming from Death Valley. The El Portal is your old school mom and pop motel likely dating back to the 1960s or early 1970s. It's a relatively small establishment having maybe 20 - 25 rooms. My wife and I stayed here for one night in August 2023 while on vacation and on our way to visit Death Valley National Park the next day. It's a very well-kept motel. It has a swimming pool in the back and an awesome old-style motel sign out front that is lit up after dark. Great for some excellent photos. The experience here harkens back to the classic days of road travel across the desert back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. The rooms are retro, but spacious and well kept. The facilities (shower, sink, toilet) were all in good shape and functioned well. The air conditioner kept the room nice and cool all night long. Check-in was easy and friendly. The price was also reasonable for this little town being the gateway to Death Valley. Oh, and there is a nice little motel kitty named Mittens you'll likely meet when either checking in at the front office or somewhere around the property during your stay. She is really sweet and enjoys being petted. Beatty also features a number of stray burros that roam the streets, some of which are friendly. For eats, Beatty has a Subway, Denny's and a couple of other local dining establishments. All in all, a good stopover through the barren desert of southeast Nevada. Nothing fancy - just good, simple and clean accommodations that won't break the bank. We would certainly stay here again should we find ourselves in this area...
