I recently stayed here while riding the GAP trail, and I completely enjoyed my stay and the accommodations and being a few hundred feet from the trail is extremely convenient. I booked one of the rooms with a private bathroom and while I wish the bathroom for my room were bigger - it might have been a closet when the house was first built - it definitely served its purpose. My room was large enough to unpack my panniers and get myself sorted for the next day's ride without feeling cluttered, and the bed was extremely comfortable and I had a great night of sleep (which is kind of rare for me...).||Josiah prepared a nice breakfast the next morning: pancakes with fresh berries and local syrups, eggs, sausage, and local mushrooms. There was no shortage of food in the morning.||For cyclists, there's a hose on the side of the house which was clutch after a day of riding on that softer, reddish material between Ohiopyle and Rockwood. There's bike storage under the porch, and you can use the support columns to lock your bike if preferred. They also have a gravity filter near the kitchen for filling water bottles if you prefer that over the tap water.||Josiah and his family were very pleasant, and I had a relaxing time talking with them on the porch during the evening and over breakfast during the morning.||Here are a few things to consider either before or after booking a stay here. Rockwood is a small community, maybe 600-800 people, so it's not bursting at the seems with restaurants. The convenience store - where people recommend getting pizza - is about 5 minutes away on foot. The brewery is about the same, and they don't have a kitchen but they have food trucks. There is a bar/restaurant in Rockwood about 15 minutes away on foot. I don't know if the American Legion post next door has an open kitchen. So, for dinner, do a little research and plan accordingly.||There is a Dollar General store across the street from the convenience store. It came in handy for a couple purchases.||The house is old, and I don't think it has as many outlets as we might expect of houses built to current codes. Consider having a multi-port charger with multiple cables if you need to charge multiple items such as bike computers and lights.||Finally, depending on the day and other schedules, Josiah might not be there and will get assistance from a woman who lives close. However, I found him to be very accommodating: communicate early with him if you have any requests or concerns and I suspect that he'll make sure things are handled...
Read moreI hate to be the person to leave a bad review, but I feel that if I had been more informed on the state of the town, we would have chosen another option. To start with the positives, the home was absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful craftsmanship and decoration, too. I would like to note that it seems that the B&B recently changed ownership, at least according to the introduction we received from a neighbor/friend. All we received prior to arrival was the door code, and any attempt to make contact with the owner was not met with any response. This is odd, because according to all the other reviews, the owner was at the house and happily made conversation. To us, it seemed as if the house was an investment property, run by someone out of town. It was clean and pretty, but lacked the touch of home that is apparent within most bed and breakfasts. The introduction we did receive was from a passing friend/neighbor of the owner, who drove into the driveway, told us where to put our bikes, and headed out. Helpful, but odd. When it came to the latter part of Bed & Breakfast, we enjoyed a small selection of foods in the fridge and on the counter, though the home-cooked meal implied by many reviews was missing, as we were alone in the house. Otherwise, the house was pleasantly quiet and well-kept. The main reason I would avoid this B&B is not due to anything in the owners control, but simply the state of the town. Unfortunately, the town seems dead except for a bright yellow dollar general. Assuming the map to be correct, we decided to grab some pizza. Well, that shopping center closed in 2021 and is for sale now. After a very long walk, in which we found two restaurants, we settled on some mediocre pizza. The map makes the town look deceivingly full of food stops and stores. Most were abandoned, closed, or simply not there. All in all, B&B -...
Read moreStayed one night with a friend during our GAP/C&O bike trip.
We did not have bad service. It was just very thin and 100% virtually-hosted.
We never saw a host, and I feel like we missed out based on the other reviews of wonderful pancake breakfasts. I pre-paid for two rooms June 18th for our October 13th stay. Somehow, the only check-in communication came through my friend's text, which I was grateful for because it had the door code and check -in instructions, yet also somewhat confused by since I never got any information on my phone or email.
We stayed on a Monday, and we got a bit lucky for dinner. The gas station down the hill and across the river (Rock City Express) had excellent pizza and was the only option in town that night (not unusual in a small town). They shut down their oven about 6PM, and we just made it.
There were some self-service breakfast items set out, but it was unremarkable, so we opted for leftover pizza. There were also items in the fridge (eggs, juice, etc.), but it was not clear whether or not these were fair game.
Not on the owners but something I would suggest they bring up to the town... the speed limit on the street is 30, and the traffic on the road exceeds that *considerably. It makes the crossing the street and the short walk to town dangerous.
I'm not sure I'd stay again if it was another...
