Stayed there last night. It is a older place, but very well maintained. Our queen room also had a twin bed in it. There was a mini-fridge and micowave. Direct TV and a small dining table with 2 chairs. They got extra points with my wife since she prefers extra pillows. In total between the 2 bed and spare pillows in the room she had access to 8 pillows (9 in room but I needed 1). There were also 2 extra blankets. I would say 3 people would be comfortable, but 4 a little criwded. The area is very quiet I did not hear a thing outside the room.
We read reviews on different sites before booking. I concur with some other reviews, the breakfast is fantastic. There were fresh cinnamon rolls(softball sized), delicious apricot pastries, and my favorite breakfast pastry sandwhiches. (Puff pasty stuffed with egg, ham, tomato, and cheese.) There was also cereal, bagels, bread and banannas. In other reviews people said there was no place to eat breakfast. They have turned another room onto a place to have breakfast.
You can see the owners care about the place and are trying their best with what they have. It is apparent they read reviews and do their best to address issues.
They lost a star because of these things. First The bathroom, it looks like it is from the 50's, well maintained. However, the tile floor is freezing to bare feet. (Not much can be done here, a rug would be more scary.) The biggest thing was taking a shower, the old plumbing makes it hard to keep a constant temperature, going from too hot back to too cold. The other minor annoyances for me were the limited outlets, mainly only on one side of the bed(wife's side, (I have a medical device, cpap) also there is no nightstand on the side without the outlet. I don't like setting my cpap and glasses on the floor. (These are not deal breakers to me, I plan ahead and carry a 20 foot extension cord with a 4 outlet end. Just an annoyance to get it...
Read moreGreat little Oasis in the middle of the desert! We stayed in room 20 and it was very cozy and nicely decorated. Maintenance is impeccable and the beds were comfortable. Rooms are quiet and there are outdoor tables and tiki torches outside the rooms to add to the already laid back ambience. The grounds are very clean and parking is ample.
"Kathy's Garden" is a break from reality. You forget you are in the middle of a town, let alone the desert! It is shaded, quiet and very relaxing. A great place to read a book, enjoy a drink or snack or, in my case, fall asleep for a half hour!
Chastity greeted us when we arrived and is just a generally all around sweet person. They had cinnamon rolls left over from the morning's breakfast (they put them out every morning, don't miss out!) and she offered us to help ourselves.
The breakfast is excellent. They make everything fresh (cinnamon rolls too I believe), and my wife has a tomato allergy. Chastity told us they would make it work, and low and behold, the next morning at breakfast, there sat one of the outstanding savory rolls with a special little flag stuck in it saying, "No tomatoes". The chia with fresh fruit cups are really tasty. It's the first time I've actually liked chia seeds in anything.
We spoke with the owner, Kathy, who was as friendly and kind as ever. She and her husband are remodeling the rooms one at a time and truly have skin in the game.
Don't hesitate to stay at the Stone Lizard, it's a great spot and a nice break from the chain...
Read moreWhat a gem this place is! Wow. I stayed two nights here in late August 2020 and couldn't have been more comfortable, delighted and impressed. From the moment I arrived inquiring about a room until my departure, the staff went out their way to make sure I was welcome, comfortable and satisfied. Seriously, the staff here is amazing -- eager to help, accommodating, knowledgeable and genuinely nice. My room was exactly what I was looking for; it was cozy, cool, clean, well-appointed and decorated with regional art. In addition to all of this, they feed you breakfast! -- and it's not just some simple, easy continental breakfast. They offer three different specialty items for breakfast -- a hot, egg/ham pastry, a large cinnamon roll or chia pudding with fresh fruit. All are outstanding! I couldn't get over how tasty it all was. I enjoyed my breakfast both mornings in Kathy's Garden behind the office, which is like a secret oasis!
A note about COVID: In case you were curious, they let rooms sit for 24 hours after someone checks out. In addition, the staff was wearing masks and taking the pandemic seriously. The place is sparkling clean. It made me feel good about staying here.
I was seriously impressed with Stone Lizard Lodge. It served as an excellent base for exploring Cedar Mesa and Bears Ears National Monument. I had such a nice stay that I didn't want to leave, actually. I look forward to returning one day. Needless to say, I highly recommend a stay here should you find yourself...
