While our stay wasn't flawless, we so thoroughly enjoyed our unique rooms the two nights we were here, I'm giving it five stars. The Victorian Hall Carriage House is a bit like a summer cottage -- in the air. There are two bedrooms, a bath with old-fashioned tub, kitchen, living room, dining area, and china pantry (!) with plenty of dishes and pans if you want to cook. There's also an enormous walk-in closet off one of the bedrooms that could possibly double as an additional bedroom for one of the two twin roll-up beds. Located on the second floor, you can open what must have been the hay mow door (now safely railed) and let in fresh breezes, giving the living room a balcony effect. There's also a small private porch with a bench located at the entrance on the first floor. If anyone in your party has mobility issues, it may not be the place for you, since there are only stairs to access and they are a bit steep and narrow.||||Due to virus concerns, the traditional breakfasts were eliminated but I thought the breakfast bags that were substituted were very tasty and filling. They included a hard-boiled egg, homemade muffin, homemade quiche in puff pastry, and yogurt. We were able to make coffee in the kitchen and warm the muffins and quiche in the oven, so it was still like having a substantial hot breakfast. The only thing that might have made it even better would have been a small piece of fruit, like a mandarin orange.||||There were also nightly homemade cookies, which were delicious. We experienced some confusion the first night, because we were told our cookies could be collected in the Victorian Hall and we could key in to get them but when we tried, neither of our keys would let us in. It turned out that both keys were only for our room, not for the Hall, but a nice couple let us in. The next night we were told by a different lady at the front desk the cookies were meant to be left under a glass dome we had seen on our porch's table. I guess the message hadn't been received by all the staff. In our room were various good quality teas and hot chocolate mixes available, though no decaf options.||||We also reported shortly after we arrived that both dining room bulbs were burned out. They were never replaced during our two-night stay, so we made do with mood lighting from the various lamps around the place. Our TV remotes (there were two -- no instructions) were also a bit wonky but the lady at the front desk on our first night helped us sort them out. ||||One nice thing about staying in the Carriage House is that we had the opportunity to tour both the Victorian Hall and Laurium Manor. In the upstairs ballroom at the manor, there are "before' pictures that help you appreciate how far these properties have come since their renovation and what a great job the owners have done to make them the charming places...
Read moreThe room. We were in 15 which doesn't have as much rich history as some of the other rooms. It was a guest room. It has a beautiful fireplace which we enjoyed looking at but it was very warm up in Calumet so we didn't light the fireplace. The queen bed was comfortable for us. It was not an overly hard bed. The bed is a little taller. This didn't bother us since ours at home is as well. The bathroom was adequate with a walk in shower. ||||The Mansion: There is a book explaining the family with a sad story of the son. We walked around the mansion after reading about it. This helped us to recognize different things including the chandeliers, fireplaces, and some of the birch woodwork. There are family pictures on the second floor which I found interesting. The large front porch was a wonderful place to enjoy our morning coffee. ||||No breakfast: This is the sole reason I am not giving it a 5 star (and considered lower). I booked and paid for the reservation through THEIR SITE, not a third party site. Once my reservation was complete I received a notice in red that we would not be receiving breakfast||||"Due to Covid-19 we will no longer be able to offer breakfast to Victorian Hall guests (Rooms #11-18 and #20).||Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate will be available at all times, along with the use of a microwave and refrigerator.||Multiple night stays will not have daily housekeeping, but fresh towels and extra amenities will be available upon request.||We will only be serving breakfast to the guests booked at the Laurium Manor Inn (Rooms #1-10 & #101)"||||I could not cancel the reservation at this point. This notice should have been shown prior to booking. Welcome to the red head stepchild reservation. ||||I found this to be very distasteful. I enjoy the fun unique breakfast often offered. With that said I don't care if they would have offered a selection of individual cereal boxes, and some milk and juice put in the refrigerator. But to notify me after I have paid is wrong. Yes coffe...
Read moreWe loved our stay so much here we stayed an extra night. I found this gem of a B&B complex totally by accident because a Google search of Calumet indicated that all of its major hotels were full. Widening my search I discovered the Laurium Mansion and Victorian Hall in Laurium, only a mile away from Calumet. Both mansions were built in the early 1900's and have been beautifully and lovingly restored. They are full of period furniture, decorations, wall coverings and lighting, and to stay there feels like being part of a living history of the place. We stayed in two different rooms in the Victorian Hall, across the street from the Laurium where one registers and goes for breakfast in the morning. The Laurium has a fascinating history, and is actually open for self-guided tours during part of the day - staying at the Victorian enabled us to tour for free. Our rooms were both suites on the super quiet third floor, which meant several flights of stairs to negotiate. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms modern and bright, the hot water hot, and the WiFi signal was strong and worked easily. Downstairs, on the first floor, was a kitchen with large refrigerator we were free to use, as well as makings for tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Freshly baked treats were left on the dining room table for us each evening. There were also all of the other downstairs rooms we were allowed to use, so it felt like we were actually living in this magnificent, old building. Breakfast was a sumptuous buffet of egg dishes or pancakes, baked breads, juices, coffee, tea and fruits. Restaurants were just a short distance away, in both Laurium and Calumet, and the Innkeepers also had great information regarding highlights and "must sees" of the surrounding area. Best of all, the room rates were actually less than the bland chain hotels I had originally tried to book. What a fortunate accident for us! Our stay in the "mansion" ended up being one of the highlights of our trip...
