The Hotel Carmichael is a gorgeous, newly-built hotel in Carmel with a top-notch location near surrounding restaurants, bars, shopping, and entertainment. The hotel has direct access to the Monon Trail, which leads you to everything midtown and downtown Carmel have to offer. If you were staying and wanted to check out the Farmer's Market or Christkindlmarkt, or if you had tickets to a show at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre or the Center for the Performing Arts, then there is no better location for your stay. The architecture of the hotel and environment when you enter are gorgeous. The staff at the front-desk were kind and helpful upon check-in. Unfortunately, when we started paying attention to the details, things were not up-to-par for a 5 star hotel.
The room was hot and never cooled down, even after setting the thermostat to 60 degrees and the fan to high. The Marriott site states that the king guest room has a mini fridge, however ours was more of a mini-bar fridge with drinks available for purchase, and those beverages were warm. We called down to the front desk to ask if the temperature could be adjusted in the fridge, and they stated it was "more of a drink chiller than a mini fridge." Someone from guest services inspected it and agreed it was warm, so they brought us a bucket of ice, which was kind of them. However it seems standard to have a true mini fridge available.
The architecture and decorations in the room were beautiful, but the cleanliness did not meet expectations. There were crumbs on the couch and sticky residue on the desk (pictured), which I cleaned myself before my friends arrived. There were disposable cups, lids, and wipes from the coffee maker area all over the floor around the desk. It was clear that housekeeping had stuffed a bunch of tissues back down into the tissue box (which is something I would do at home if myself or my kids grabbed too many tissues, but not something I would do in a professional environment). The bathroom sink took several minutes to get hot water, and each time we turned on the sink for a few seconds to wash our hands, there was a puddle of water that would leak from around the hot water knob.
Finally, for a luxurious hotel with rooms often costing more than $400+/night, there would typically be some sense of security. However, we returned to the hotel at 10:55pm and used the small side-door closest to the Monon Trail, and did not need a room key to open the door. We were surprised that no staff member was there watching the entrance since anyone could just walk inside. Also, the elevators did not require a key to access the floors with guest rooms. So, anyone could walk in the side door from the trail, walk upstairs to the lobby, and head up in an elevator without ever being detected (no hotel staff were at the front desk when we arrived late in the evening).
For the location, this hotel is the best option with its walkability and direct access to shopping and restaurants. However, for a luxurious, new-construction hotel, it leaves much...

Read moreI'm someone who appreciates modern technology, and I'm someone who also appreciates the ways of old. So I'm very happy to say that Hotel Carmichael has brought the best of both worlds together. Let's start with the lobby. The hotel was opened in 2020, but not knowing this, one would think based off of the architecture that it was constructed in the turn of the century. Large oil paintings line the walls, and one can find a lounge area with a bar and marble wood-burning fireplace. A small and quiet library can also be found near the lounge. Chandeliers are everywhere in the hotel - in hallways, the lobby, and even in hotel rooms. A primary theme of this hotel is music. This is cool already, but as a kid who's in both concert and jazz band in my high school, this is amazing. For example, you might find a book about Frank Sinatra in the library or a poster of him in a hallway. At 4pm every day one of the staff members of the hotel present a toast with the guests in the lobby, champagne and all. Then, a self-playing grand piano starts playing tunes from the Great American Songbook. One last thing about the ambiance - the hotel had a smell to it, almost like sage. In my opinion it smelled good, and felt warm and inviting. I realize that that is a matter of debate, but I noticed it, so I suppose I should put it in my review. The rooms are great as well. I stayed in the double queen room, and it was amazing. A chandelier hung over the two very comfy beds, which were facing a large TV. An Amazon Alexa is in the room, and she can tell you the weather, play music, and even have the hotel bring things up to your room. The bathroom is luxurious as well. The shower in particular is very nice as one can just sit on the ledge and relax while hot water pours over them. Lastly, the service is great too. Service is attentive and friendly. Also, the hotel is in a great location, as it is surrounded by downtown Carmel, a very nice, even fancy downtown district. The Monon trail is right by the hotel and taking the trail north leads to more shopping and fun. To conclude, I enjoyed my stay here very much, and in my opinion this is the top spot to stay in Carmel. These Autograph Collection hotels are amazing, and I'll definently see more of them...
