The first thing to note, I'm very literal, including my review scores - it's an overall of I how I feel, so a 3/5 isn't necessarily a critical review. This motel is just the basics - if all you want is a decent place to sleep in a location near some fun outdoors-y stuff, consider this review 5/5. But I believe the key to having a good experience is to set your expectations appropriately, and I feel there are things worth mentioning, as ultimately, I felt misled by the glowing reviews which led to my disappointment. The rooms are tiny, not even a desk; there is WiFi, but it doesn't extend to most of the regular rooms (though you should be fine if you get a cottage) and the area is a total deadzone for cellular reception. The TV is an old CRT with basic cable, power outlets are scarce - don't expect to have fun on your laptop, and any media you typically consume (e-books, TV shows, music), make sure you download before hand, or at least plan on spending some time near the office to get a WiFi signal to download. Pro tip if you use Google Maps or similar, download a map of the area before hand as well; since it is a total deadzone, you will be unable to use Google Maps navigation unless you saved the map for offline use. Other notes on facilities include no A/C unit, and the shower is composed of flimsy plastic walls. As a city dweller, and I did not have the best of times. But the room looked clean (although there was musky smell), beds were serviceable, the shower worked with hot water, and restroom was clean and stocked. Given the price and location, it isn't really fair to ask for more than that. The folks were nice and pointed up some nearby areas of interest, including a wonderful little restaurant down the street. So, despite being disappointed, which would warrant a lower score (say 2/5 - "Meh, I've experienced better"), I'm trying to approach this with a level head, and ultimately there wasn't anything glaring that the motel did wrong; in fact, the service was great in a small-town, family-owned business sort of way. The main critical sticking point is that the facilities are minimal, which overall left me not feeling particularly enthusiastic, but they are serviceable, so I'm not particularly dissatisfied either. If you set your expectations appropriately, I'd wager you'd have a better experience than I did, probably even a...
Read moreJohnson's Motel and Cottages is about 8 minutes from the Zealand Road, which we took to the Zealand trailhead to park for our backpacking trip. You couldn't be closer, unless you stayed at the Zealand campsite. We called several places in the area, which all sounded more or less the same, but it was Colleen (the owner/manager) who sold us to select Johnson's. She was extremely helpful and knowledgable - and flexible - working with us on dates because the weather was so unpredictable. She recommended great places to eat and shop, giving us detailed instructions. She and her husband were very hospitable and they made us feel very comfortable. We stayed in the Kory cottage, which was open spaced one room with sitting area, a full kitchen, cable TV, and screened in porch with chairs/table. It was big enough for us and all our gear, cooking dinner and breakfast in. While our stay was short - only one night - it was quite pleasant. We would stay...
Read moreWhere can I start? If you decide to get into the hospitality business, the first quality you need is friendliness! The owner (the husband) was very stand offish and very cold at best if not rude. Did not say hello unless you spoke to him. In fact he went out of his way to ignore us. One would think he was doing us a favor to let us stay at his motel. We were paying clients for crying out loud!!! A very cold and unwelcoming reception is what we got. Needless to say, we aren't coming back. The room smelled of Dog pee, no AC, the beds were as hard as a brick and we woke up with strange bites upon inspection of the mattress , i saw a couple of live BEDBUGS and bloody splotches on the sheets so we left the next day. The general cleanliness left alot to be desired! A total waste of money! First thing I did upon getting home was nuke our clothes to get rid of any bugs we might have picked up. Staying at this place was horrendous....
