I think declaring this a “destination” hotel is a far stretch. It’s first and foremost a business hotel that primarily serves the EMBA and associated mid-level company executives at the UNC B School. The DuBose House, which is the beautiful and historically significant property the Rizzo Center features on its website, is not generally available to stay in, though they have a handful of rooms that seemed to be hotel rooms.
That said, it’s a well-run business hotel, and comfortable/accommodating enough for families with young children. The rooms are clean and well-stocked. The room had a coffee maker, a robe and Nest brand toiletries. Cleaning staff comes through every day.
The only complaint I had about the room is the HVAC handler was super loud. And it was consistently humid and in the upper 90’s so we really didn’t have the option of not using the AC.
Breakfast is included, but the offerings are not super extensive, but of decent quality. (No fresh eggs available, but they did have fresh fruit every day.)
The property has an outdoor pool and the hotel provides pool towels. There’s also a full bar with a limited menu (bar foods) but only opens at 5:30. No options for lunch on the property.
Overall a nice stay but I felt misled by their advertising. The hotel is more appropriate for business travel rather...
Read moreThey have roaches. This is a 3-star hotel. It IS nice for a 3-star but they have roaches. It’s 1:30am, I’m here, and I cannot sleep because about 4 hours ago, I spotted a huge (no exaggeration) roach 🪳 on the wall. I call to the front desk for assistance and he clearly didn’t take me seriously. I called back for him to at least bring me some bug spray or a broom and he said it will be a while. That was 4 hours ago, no one came. I took a towel and smacked the roach off the wall and trapped it under a cup. Then after I had a little peace of mind to sleep, I reached in the closet and pulled down the extra blanket/pillow bag and lo and behold…..a baby roach 🪳. At this point I don’t know what to think. Before I go home, I must shake all my clothes out and check my bag because I don’t do roaches! I really wanted to leave a great review and I wanted my stay to be great but….roaches??? And then the fact that the front desk basically showed me they didn’t give two rats as* about my room having roaches further let me know what kind of place this is. Can they afford pest control? Did they really wash my linen? What about my towels? The shower? This is the second hotel I stayed at in the last 3 months that was owned by a college and boasted or 3 or 4 star status but was undercover nasty. Ugh! I’m so…just so...

The Rizzo Center also offers a range of amenities, including a fitness center, outdoor pool, and free shuttle services, which made our stay even more enjoyable. The inclusive hot buffet breakfast was delicious and offered a variety of options to suit all tastes.
