Update 01/11/2025 : "Snifter Cindy" - our golf group won't be seeing you for a third year in a row. We tried to make reservations for our group, but nobody ever got back to us (Underwood). We ended up booking The Dream in West Branch as places were filling up fast for September 2025. Maybe our group will try again next year as we really enjoyed our stay at the Evergreen. My review below from our last trip remains unchanged:
Exceeded my expectations: I was skeptical after reading the negative reviews, but I was with a golf group, and the organizer booked us here.
I stayed in room 155, and it was completely updated. New shower and tub insert, tile floor, toilet, vanity, sink, textured wallpaper, etc.
The room has two queen beds (brand new), and they are comfortably firm. Everything in the room is new, including the carpet. The carpet, however, has a dark brown and black pattern that may give the illusion that it's dated, but looking closely, you'll see its brand new threads!
What is not new is the doors. They are the dark wood, heavy-duty doors, and the room decor kinda blends with that color. So even though the rooms are fresh and nicely remodeled, the darker colors might give the illusion that the rooms are dated, but I assure you, they are not.
I will stay in room 155 again, on my next trip up. I'm a little high maintenance, and this suited me just fine, especially since I expected the worst because of others' reviews.
In a separate building, there is a LARGE POOL, Sauna, and large hot tub. There is plenty of deck space to lounge around and hang out. The large windows bring in a lot of natural light while also giving you a view of the outdoors.
There are two restaurants here: One is Curly's Bar & Grill where you can get lunch and dinner. The other is named Passage North, and that's where the breakfast buffet is served. That's a large, more formal area, but I think they only do breakfast here at the moment (I could be wrong). We got a breakfast pass/coupon with our reservation, and breakfast was great!!!! Fresh fruit, bagels, toast, pastries, eggs, sausage, biscuits, potatoes, etc. We ate here twice on our visit.
The Curly's staff was great. They seemed a little understaffed for as many folks that came in this weekend, but the 3 waitresses and one fella who showed up worked together and did a great job of getting to everyone.
There were a few large groups, and the staff earned their money, especially Snifter Cindy, Uber Paige, and Miss Shorty. These girls hustled to make sure we had drinks and everything else we asked for. Thank you, ladies!
That goes for housekeeping, too. When we got back to our rooms, the beds were made, the room was cleaned up, and fresh towels were provided.
Jill in the pro shop sold me a new club, and it turned out to be a magic putter! She said I would sink impossible putts, and I did!!!
The course was in decent shape. The golf carts were shockingly fast, and it was a great round to finish up our 3 of 3 courses played this weekend.
If you read this far, give it a thumbs up. You certainly earned it.
All I can say is, don't believe the negative reviews. If you're here and something doesn't meet your expectations, tell the staff, and they will make it right.
This place exceeded my expectations, and I will be back with another golf group...
Read moreI do want to give it more than 3 stars, but I cannot get past the condition of the parking lot over the weekend of 2/26/21 - 3/1/21. I wish I would have taken a photo. The entire parking lot was nothing but ice with different height levels (it was like off-roading in your vehicle). This was the main parking area as well as all parking areas near the different buildings with guest rooms. And it wasn't just either the parking spots specifically or the main through-ways. It was all areas of the lots. You could also tell that even the areas (landings) near each of the doorways had not been treated and was slippery depending on the time of day. I didn't call Friday evening when I first arrived because I had assumed (silly me) that for as crowded as the place was (and we'd supposedly booked one of the last available rooms), that the front desk staff would have already received multiple complaints/concerns. This situation became even more confusing when my husband and I drove into town to find no issues with any of the parking lots (all ice/snow free) at restaurants/grocery stores/shopping plazas/etc. I finally had my husband ask about it at the front desk during check-out, and the woman seemed quite confused and said this was the first she was hearing about ice in the parking lots and how they're usually treated, yet if one looked out into the lots from the main lobby, you could see mostly ice and not much of the concrete/asphalt. The entire weekend, I had to be incredibly careful when going to/from the car because I had slipped multiple times, but thankfully did not fall. I braced myself against the building and car a lot. Even my husband slipped a few times. As for the rest of my weekend experience, I thought the cross-country ski trails were awesome for beginners (skis and snow-shoe rentals are on a first come, first served basis (with a good rental price)--they have a decent amount, but not like a true ski resort, but there's also some places in town where you can rent from). I would suggest bringing sleds because there are some nice hills that would be great for a family sledding adventure. I also appreciated the hot breakfasts on Sat & Sun (same meal for everyone, but happy they still offered this much because of covid) and even the bagged breakfast Monday morning contained a good amount of food. Everyone on the weekend breakfast staff was friendly, professional and kind. The room was clean and cozy and never ran out of hot water. We didn't order from Curly's, but opted to try some places in town and near the lake. I was very happy that the pool, hot tub and sauna were all open. Overall, this was a great weekend-getaway experience, but if we return in the future, I'll be sure to speak-up if I feel that something isn't...
Read moreWe only used the resort for overnight lodging, and the only facilities we can speak to are the room we stayed in, the pool, and the breakfast buffet. The room was one of the renovated rooms with two queen beds, and though it was somewhat small, it was clean and well-maintained. We noticed immediately that the walls were paper-thin; we could hear every flush and door shut, and conversations were far more audible than we'd expect for being in a resort hotel. We had our 3 and 1 year old with us, and while no one comolained to us regarding noise level, I'm sure our children disturbed those around us despite our best efforts to keep them calm and happy. The bathtub drain was slow, and in addition to this, the water didn't fully divert to the shower head when the shower switch was pulled, which wasted a lot of water and reduced pressure. There was also some water spots / stains on the bathroom ceiling as though the floor above had had a leak. The pool and hot tub were both well-maintained and clean, and there were plenty of fresh towels. The pool was cool, but not nearly as cold as the hotel pools we've used before. The breakfast buffet in the resort's on-site restaurant was delicious and moderately nicer / more comprehensive than a typical continental breakfast at a nice hotel. The food was hot and the staff were very vigilant with the serving trays to ensure they didn't run out of any items during breakfast. As it is in a restaurant setting, we strongly recommend not walking to breakfast all disheveled in pajamas. The staff was courteous and considerate at every turn, providing a fan to us for white noise, explaining a billing situation that I mistook for a clerical error, and maintaining a friendly and open demeanor with every interaction. It is highly unlikely that we would stay there again while we have young children, but for what we paid and the overall experience, it was not necessarily a...
