We went to visit Fallingwater and were pleasantly surprised by all the recreational offerings in the area. The inn itself is a real charmer. I expected a bagel and coffee for the “free breakfast”, oh noooo, way more. Charity, our breakfast chef and hostess made roasted vegetables and sausages, topped with an over easy egg, plenty of juices, coffee in a French press, fresh fruit and yogurt, etc. They also have a beverage station which is available any time of the day or night. The kitchen features a beautiful authentic farm sink and pleasing decor.
We rented the downstairs suite and were very comfortable there. Very nice toiletries in the bath and very good quality white towels and linens.
It took us 25 minutes to drive to Fallingwater and there are a couple of scenic overlooks along the way in the Ohiopyle State Park. FYI: book the early tour if possible at Fallingwater. We had no trouble since we went early. Also, 2 minutes drive away from the Inn, the Youghiogheny Dam has a nice little beach and swimming area which is very kid friendly. Plus, you can wade in the Casselman River, literally two blocks away. You can rent bikes locally if you aren’t an avid cyclist and just want to have a light bike ride. During our stay, we met some avid cyclists on bike tours who were also staying at the Inn. That was pretty cool to talk to them and learn their stories.
We had a great time. We will stay at the Smith House Inn when we go back to Fallingwater next year to take relatives....
Read moreWe stayed in the Garden Suite after visiting Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, and before spending the next day in Ohiopyle State Park.
As it happened, we were the only guests that (midweek) evening and had the entire house to ourselves. A lot of thought had been put into the renovation of the Garden Suite, which had a clean, tasteful decor and an immense bathroom with a white tile floor and a glass-walled shower big enough for two with a lot of extra space. Each of the guest rooms has its own temperature control, although we chose to open the windows and rely on the evening air.
After walking a couple of blocks to the River's Edge Cafe for dinner, we strolled into town before returning to the Inn and taking advantage of the large sitting room, which is stocked with games and books.
Breakfast was excellent, elegantly presented, and included yogurt parfait, eggs, Canadian bacon and a selection of juices. It also provided us with an opportunity to enjoy talking with Pam, who was helping out since we were a last-minute booking.
Little extras are included, including granola bars to keep you going while hiking or biking, and small...
Read moreA gem in southern PA. Lovely 1920’s home that has been lovingly maintained. The ground floor has been kept in period style, with original woodwork, tin ceiling, chandeliers, and decorations (love the old typewriter and Singer sewing machine). We stayed in the Sterner room upstairs. Immaculate, very comfortable bed/pillows/linens, and the bath tub was great! (Just don’t hit your head on the slanted ceiling.) The street was exceptionally quiet. The innkeeper, Stacy, greeted us and showed us around. The house has EVERYTHING you could imagine. Snacks, ice, water, coffee, tea, and a delightful front porch. The breakfast (made by the owner’s cousin sorry cannot recall her name!) was delicious (a vegetable egg tort, bacon, toast, and a yummy plum parfait). We met a very friendly group of bikers who were at the halfway point on the GAP trail. Would come back here in...
