This was our second stay - in December, 2023 - at the Spencer House, because the first time was so special. This bed and breakfast is located on 6th street, which is called "Millionaire's Row", because of all the mansions built in the 1800's by the wealthy elite of Erie. The restorations are incredible. We took my wife's brother and girlfriend there after a trip to Niagara Falls. There is ample, free parking is in the back of the house.
There are new owners now, Steve and Lisa, and they were wonderful. Steve gave us a great tour of the house. We could tell he was genuinely "in love" with the house, and took great pride in showing it to us. The woodwork and incredible details are amazing. Lisa makes her own decorations, and we all thought they had been purchased from professional sources. There was a tall Frazier fur Christmas tree decorated in beautiful ribbons and ornaments in the sitting room, across from the library.
Our room was large, beautifully decorated in the Victorian style befitting of the house's architecture, and spotless. Our room had a king-sized bed (great mattress), a sofa, writing desk, a dresser, large closet, bathroom, and plenty of towels and extra pillows and blankets. Our room was very very quiet, and the temperature was perfect. There was a small refrigerator on each floor with free soda and water.
In the morning, the owners presented us with a large breakfast. There were 12 guests, all of whom were happy and pleasant, with fun conversation with people from different states. The blueberry Franch toast was more like a giant muffin ... and was to die for. The best I've ever had. There were also eggs, potatoes, bacon, fresh orange juice, coffee, etc. To top it all off, one of the members of our party was gluten sensitive, and they went out of their way to provide gluten-free bread for the French toast!!!
As a comparison, we have also stayed in the past at a $400 per night hotel in Erie that had a small, very plain room with poor visibility of the outside, and a mediocre free breakfast. The Spencer House blew that "premiere" hotel away for half the price.
Our party gives the Spencer House and its hosts a five start rating for style, ambiance, service, and food. Make sure to stay there for a...
Read moreSpencer House Bed and Breakfast in Erie, Pennsylvania is a wonderful, clean place to stay in a gorgeous Victorian mansion! It is centrally located near downtown Erie, but on a quiet street filled with large beautiful homes. We loved our stay and the hosts, Steve and Lisa will make sure of it. During our trip, we enjoyed telling them what we'd be visiting in town and they were full of helpful hints about extras to see in the area and tips to get around town easily. They became friends by the end of the week. They have an application that is full of information as well you can download to your phone. The booking process online was easy and the house is beautiful! The stay and breakfast were very affordable. The rooms are located on the second and third floors. There are several nice common areas on the first floor, the library, parlor and upstairs sitting room which includes a shared fridge. The free soda and candy was much appreciated. We felt very comfortable and our hosts were very accommodating. They work very hard to make sure guests feel welcomed and keep beautiful gardens out front. We enjoyed the Erie, PA photo slideshow on the tv as well. The porch is delightful to sit on, but in case of bad weather there are plenty of games. The breakfast is spectacular and changes every day. They have informative pamphlets for area businesses as well. Our room was Mary's Room, which has a comfortable bed and small stand up shower. Guests looking for more space have plenty of other room options here as well. Thank you, Steve and Lisa for making our trip to Erie, PA even more special! Best of luck to you...
Read moreWe spent 2 nights the weekend of July 4th as an impromptu weekend at Lake Erie. Steve met us at checkin and showed us around the historic house before taking us up to our room. Spencer House is a relic from another time that Steve and Lisa obviously take pride in maintaining. Many of the original features of the house remain intact and one can be forgiven for mistaking 2022 for 1872.
We stayed in The Nursery which has 2 comfortable full beds and a private bath just outside the room. The bath has a free standing bath tub w/ shower and a pull chain toilet which was a hoot. The house is very quiet and we were unable to hear guests in the other rooms or their comings and goings. Breakfast was served downstairs in the dining room and we were offered a choice between two seatings at 8 or 9am which worked well for us as we wanted to get an early start on our days. Breakfast was a full hot breakfast consisting of coffee and juice, yogurt parfait, eggs, potatoes, waffles and ham the first morning, and fresh fruit, eggs, potatoes, cinnamon chip pancakes (yum!), and sausage the second morning. Both were delicious and kept us full easily through lunch.
Spencer House is walking distance to several small city parks as well as State St, the main artery through downtown Erie. We walked for morning coffee, dinner as well as down to the marina area. Presque Isle is an easy 15 minute drive. We found Erie easy to navigate and Spencer House is a great location to base from.
This trip won't be our last to Erie and we'll definitely stay at Spencer...
