Country Motel — Hotel in Gages Lake

An absolutely horrible experience and place. Phoned and asked about room rate, was told $66 but when we got there 8 mins later that room had been taken so we had to get the $75 room. She showed us the room with the lights off and curtains closed and we naively paid along with a $10 deposit. Went and collected some food and 20 minutes later when we got back, opened curtains and turned on the lights we saw how absolutely disgusting it was. Closer you looked the worse it got. Brown stains splashed up the walls, everything was yellowing and furnishings had layers of filth, tv was broken, we checked the bed and there was huge clumps of hair under the sheets along with actual crusty stains showing they hadn’t even been washed. We went to ask for our money back because we felt uncomfortable staying there and the lady was incredibly rude and arrogant and all she would offer was to change the blanket, kept saying we had lost her money because she’d turned down other people for the room (she lost money because the room was unfit for purpose!) eventually she gave us our money back but kept our deposit for absolutely nothing. What an awful person and an awful place. Website says fully refurbished, clearly a lie, would genuinely worry about catching...

The place doesn’t look too bad on the outside but when I walked into the room they gave me, first thing I noticed was the smell. It reaked of dirty bed sheets and urine. Immediately, I wanted to check out and get my money back the moment I walked in there. But due to my circumstances at the moment, I had to just deal with it. Went to bed and woke up at 3:00 am to a bed bug crawling on my face. Then I turned on the lights and found more bed bugs on the wall and on the headboard. I was mortified. And covered in bites. Went straight to the owners and asked for my money back. They refused to give me a refund because I had the room for 5 hours already. Then they accused me of bringing the bed bugs and swore up and down they have never seen a bed bug in their motel. The owners were so rude and unwilling to work with me. Finally they settled on giving me $25 dollars back. By this point, It’s 3:30 am, I’m covered in bites, absolutely disgusted, and now I have to try to find an available room in the middle of the night (which is not easy btw) and had to spend even more money on another Room. This motel is a hidden gem! We have been coming here for over 10 years. There are not many family owned motels anymore, and the owners here are very kind and run a tight ship. I don’t know of any other place where you can stay for $66/night in a quiet, comfortable environment. Some people might complain that the motel hasn’t been renovated in a long time, and it’s clean but not pristine, but honestly if you want a five star hotel then you should go elsewhere. We have been here many, many times and never had any issue. We are always made to feel at home.

The owners have always been welcoming and kind. They probably deal with all kinds of characters, and they still maintain a calm, quiet, and safe environment. They didn’t get there by being pushovers. So maybe some people got upset and left bad reviews, but if you approach the owners with courtesy and respect, they will treat you with the same!
